Slanica Island (Slovak: Slanický ostrov) is the largest island of the Orava reservoir (Slovak: Oravská priehrada) in the traditional region of Orava in northern Slovakia. It is also one of the largest lake islands of any water reservoir or lake in Slovakia.
Geography[edit]
The island is roughly circular in shape, with an elevation of several metres above the typical water level of the Orava reservoir and is mildly forested with a series of groves. Most of the foliage on the island consists of deciduous trees.
History[edit]
The island is, in a sense, artificial, as it was originally a taller hill protruding above the local landscape. The hill that became Slanica Island was once the tallest point of the now-defunct Oravan village of Slanica, which lent the newly formed island its name. The village of Slanica, along with a few other small settlements in the area, was demolished in the 1940s and 1950s and its inhabitants were moved elsewhere, to make way for the construction of the Orava Dam and the subsequent construction of the Orava water reservoir project.
Since the construction of the water reservoir project, Slanica Island has sheltered some of the last architectural remnants of the original village, now protected as local historical heritage. The centrepiece of the surviving rural Oravan architecture of Slanica is the village's original church, still standing and maintained to this day. Several of the uppermost chapels from the village's former calvary have also survived and are maintained along with the church.
Tourism[edit]
A new building constructed after the construction of the Orava reservoir and the creation of the island is an art gallery, operated as a local branch of the regional Orava Gallery in Dolný Kubín. Slanica Island is the only island in Slovakia to house a museum of art or art gallery. The gallery now serves as the main tourist attraction, along with the preserved historical architecture of the village church and rural chapels.
Slanica Island is accessible to the public, but only to temporarily visiting tourists. The island has no permanent inhabitants. Overnight stays of visitors or permanent residence is not legally permitted. Motor vehicles are not used or permitted on the island. Tourists are ferried to and from the island's sole dock by local sightseeing tour boats.
