Snoot Game is a 2021 parody narrative adventure game developed by Cavemanon.[1] The game spoofs and uses stolen assets from Goodbye Volcano High, an upcoming video game announced in 2020.[2] In Snoot Game, the player character is involved in detransitioning Goodbye Volcano High protagonist Fang from identifying as genderqueer into identifying as a cisgender woman.[1] Snoot Game was critically panned for its alt-right politics, anti-LGBT rhetoric, and use of stolen assets.[3]
Background[edit]
Goodbye Volcano High is an upcoming visual novel that was first announced at the 2020 Sony digital showcase.[3] While the game attracted positive attention for its centering of a genderqueer main character and its art style, these same elements drew the ire of 4chan's /vg/ board, known for its anti-LGBT views.[4] Several anonymous users on /vg/ founded Cavemanon and began work on Snoot Game.[4] Cavemanon stated they developed Snoot Game "as a critique of Goodbye Volcano High's characters".[4]
Story and gameplay[edit]
Set in the year 201M2020 BC, Snoot Game tells the story of protagonist Anon Y. Mous, a high school senior who transfers to Volcano High near the end of the first semester. Volcano High, located in Volcaldera Bluffs, is a school primarily attended by anthropomorphic dinosaurs. Anon's reasons for transferring schools are at first unclear, and he vows to keep a low profile and graduate high school with no more issues.
Throughout the remainder of the school year, Anon meets and befriends several dinosaur classmates, including Fang, a pterodactyl who identifies as non-binary.[lower-alpha 1] He also meets Reed and Trish, bandmates of Fang's in the band VVURM DRAMA. As the story progresses, a relationship develops between Anon and Fang. Anon is involved in detransitioning Fang from identifying as genderqueer into identifying as a cisgender woman.[1]
The choices the player makes throughout the game lead them towards one of four potential endings, with choices that help Anon overcome his apathy and anti-social tendencies leading towards one of the good endings. Similarly, choices that allow Fang to figure out who they are and grow stronger as a person contribute towards a good ending. Another playable ending of Snoot Game involves Fang committing a school shooting at Volcano High, in reference to a macabre Internet meme mocking Goodbye Volcano High.[5]
In addition to co-opting the character Fang, Snoot Game also uses stolen assets from Goodbye Volcano High, such as character designs and art.[6]
Reception[edit]
Snoot Game was universally panned by critics. Noah Laybolt criticized Snoot Game as an "unpleasant project" that leans "on the laziest alt-right themes during a time when trans rights in the real world are ever-more threatened."[4] Junior Miyai and Daniel Villarreal condemned Cavemanon's theft of Goodbye Volcano High assets to create an anti-LGBT game promoting an alt-right narrative.[7] Amelia Hansford rejected Snoot Game as a "vile anti-LGBTQ+ clone" of Goodbye Volcano High.[8]
KO_OP, the studio behind Goodbye Volcano High, has condemned Snoot Game as not having been made in good faith.[4] To deter harassment associated with Snoot Game and its fandom, discussion of and references to Cavemanon's parody are prohibited on KO_OP's official Discord server.[4]
