So the Story Goes is the second studio album by the American rock band the Clydes.

Content[edit]

The ten-track alternative-pop album was released on 20 October 2017 with Mint 400 Records, and was produced by Neil Sabatino. It is conceptually about love, doubt, defeat and finding hope, and the songs are described as "melodic, emotive and easy-listening tunes."[1][2] It utilizes trumpet and a wide arrangement of guitar and keyboard tones.[3] The music video for "Holly Speaks," the first single, features New Brunswick, New Jersey concert promoter Brittney on Fire as a ghostly woman who walks through a cemetery, going unnoticed by those around her while the band plays at a house party.[2] The concept was written by Sabatino, who also directed the video.[4] The music video for second single "Broken Boy," is a black-and-white narrative that stars the band's leaders, brothers Brent and Brian Johnson, and Brent's fiancé.[5] "Broken Boy" also appears on the 2018 Mint 400 compilation album, NJ / NY Mixtape.

In an interview with AXS, Brent Johnson explains "this was an album where it felt like we were really clicking all over the place in the songwriting. We love every track on it. We think it's the album that represents us the most."[1] The band notes while writing So the Story Goes, guitarist Brian Johnson drew inspiration from '90s Britpop, especially Oasis.[4] The song "The Vampire Of Hanover" was written from the point of view of Fritz Haarmann, a German serial killer from the early 20th century.[3]

Reception[edit]

A review by Joe Wawrynkiak in Jersey Beat calls the album "soothing and gently melodic," and writes that "the peppy vocals soar over a snappy array of jubilant guitar riffs, smooth basslines, and constant forward-ho drums." He closes by saying So the Story Goes is "a damn fine album."[6] Impose describes So the Story Goes as "find[ing] the quartet working through frustrations, cosmic or otherwise, with dazzling guitar work and tight rhythms to an exhilarating effect."[7]

New Jersey Stage columnist Bob Makin describes So the Story Goes as a "kind of mellow record" and notes "I especially like the rollicking pine of 'Holly Speaks,' the earnest, contemplative strum of 'Jueves,' and the stirring trumpet of frequent Mint 400 collaborator Erin Lockett on the hauntingly acoustic 'Melody.'"[8]
