Sobrante is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California, United States.[1] It is located on the Southern Pacific Railroad 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of Pinole Point,[3] at an elevation of 23 feet (7 m).[1]
In 1878, the Northern Railway was built from Oakland to Martinez and the Sobrante station, named for nearby El Sobrante, was built.[4]
In the late 1800s, Sobrante was a fishing village populated by Croatians[5], Hungarians and Yugoslavians.[4]
In the 1880s, Sobrante was the site of the Sobrante Safety Nitro-power Works.[6][7] In 1892,[5] Giant Powder Company had moved to Sobrante.[8][9][10]
The village at Sobrante lasted until WW I.[4]
