The Society for Women in Marine Science (SWMS) is an American scientific society that aims to support women in marine science and oceanography. It is the only professional society solely focused on supporting and advancing women in marine sciences. The US-based society was founded in 2014 at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and is led by volunteer early-career researchers.[1][2][3]

Mission[edit]

"The Society for Women in Marine Science brings together marine scientists of all career levels to discuss the diverse experiences of women in marine science, celebrate the research done by women in the field, and promote the visibility of women in the marine science community."[4]

Chapters[edit]

The society has chapters in the US and internationally, which are based at marine labs, public and private universities, and in cities, like Seattle.[5][6][7][8][9] Chapters also include high school students as part of the Black Girls Dive Foundation chapter.[10]

Chapters hold small events for their members, as well as larger national events.[9][11][12] The Delmarva region chapters held a national symposium for students and professionals, which featured an outreach event for local girls, in September 2019.[6][11][13]

Events and Programs[edit]

In addition to chapter-led events, SWMS has hosted symposiums at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Rhode Island.[14][15][16][17] These events include speakers, scientific presentations, panels, and workshops.[15][17][18] Previous speakers include Dr. Robinson (Wally) Fulweiler, Dr. Amy Bower, Dr. Caroline Solomon, Dr. Amala Mahadevan, Dr. Rick Murray, and Dr. Scott Doney.[14][19]

The society also hosted a town hall event at the American Geophysical Union's Ocean Sciences meeting in 2018.[20] SWMS occasionally profiles members and posts other resources in their blog.[21] They also run a mentorship program.[22]

Funding[edit]

As of November 2019, SWMS was not a federally-registered 501(c)(3) charity; the SWMS Steering Committee is fundraising to support SWMS becoming a nonprofit organization.[4]

SWMS has partnered with McLane Research Labs and Woods Hole SeaGrant for previous events, including sponsorships.[23][24]
