West Bengal (/bɛŋˈɡɔːl/, Bengali: Paschim Banga [ˈpoʃtʃim ˈbɔŋgo] (listen)) is a state in the eastern region of India along the Bay of Bengal. Kolkata was the capital of the British Indian Empire until 1911 to India and is now the capital of West Bengal, hub of software It parks.
Since the late 1990s, Kolkata has managed to board the all-India bandwagon of buzzing economic sectors like information technology (IT) and business process outsourcing (BPO), along with a good pace of development matching all India average[1] with the liberalization of the Indian economy. In 2009, Kolkata was ranked the hardest of 17 Indian cities in which to do business by the World Bank.[2]However in 2019, Kolkata, along with Bengaluru was included in the list of cities in India for the World Bank's ease of doing business survey in India, which so far covered only Delhi and Mumbai.[3]
IT/ITeS SEZ[edit]
As of 2020[update], West Bengal has 22 formally approved special economic zones (SEZ).[4] Of these, 17 are related to information technology (IT) or IT, enabled services (ITES).[5] :28
