Soma Cruz (Japanese: 来須 蒼真 Hepburn: Kurusu Sōma) is a character and the protagonist of Konami's action-adventure game Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, part of Konami's Castlevania video game series. Soma is an 18-year-old transfer student studying in Japan (or simply a Japanese high school student, in the Japanese version[2]), where he finds himself in the castle of Dracula, the principal antagonist of the series. Soma discovers his "Power of Dominance" (支配の力 Shihai no Chikara), or his ability to claim the souls and abilities of the monsters he defeats as his own. As the game's story progresses, Soma learns of Dracula's demise, and that he is his reincarnation. Soma returns in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow fighting the attempts of a cult to slay him and create a new dark lord when one did not surface during the events of Aria of Sorrow.
He was designed by Ayami Kojima as part of producer Koji Igarashi's desire to try a "different route" for the Castlevania series. Due to Igarashi's satisfaction with Soma and the storyline in Aria of Sorrow, and he was redesigned with a new anime appearance. Besides the two main games, Soma has been featured in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Bomberman R. He is consistently voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa.
Several video game publications have praised Soma's character. Although Soma himself was viewed as a stereotypical echo of previous Castlevania protagonists, critcizing his androgynous looks but still praising the design for the level of detail and powers he shows. The new context that the storyline of Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow provided for him rectified was also the subject of praise. The character stood out within many writers and scholars due to his relationship with Dracula.
Conception and design[edit]
The character of Soma Cruz was created for the game Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow game by Koji Igarashi. In all of the previous installments, Dracula continuously appeared as the villain, resulting in the decision of creating his reincarnation Soma Cruz and give the series a major change as the staff found the franchise lacked innovation.[3][4] Igarashi wanted to try a "different route" for the series by setting it in a futuristic world.[5]
Soma was designed by Ayami Kojima, who had previously worked on the characters in Castlevania games since Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. While the characters' costumes in previous games had medieval motifs, Souma's costume had a more modern design[6] Kojima's drawings are made in a dark, gothic style, and borrow heavily from bishōnen-style art.[7] Keeping with Igarashi's "different route" motif, Soma's appearance was made noticeably more contemporary, sporting more modern clothing in comparison to the medieval attire of characters in previous Castlevania games.[5] As Soma is Japanese, for the overseas version, the company Konami said he was a foreign exchange student living in Japan. That was made in order to make him relatable to the Western audience as a result of the franchise's popularity in several region. Igarashi askd Kojima to "draw him like a Japanese person who doesn't look very Japanese." In the aftermath, Igarashi had people tell him he does not look Japanese to them, so which resulted into a major approval. Igarashi wanted a name that would translate well to foreign players. As for "Cruz", it was a homage to Penelope Cruz had just visited Japan in the making of the game. Meanwhile, "Cruz" also has associations with "cross" that which Igarashi liked. "Soma" is taken from the name of the Indian ritual drink soma. And actually, director Junichi Murakami's son's name who is named Soma.[3]
Soma's inclusion in Dawn of Sorrow, a rare sequel in the Castlevania series, was made by Igarashi, who stated that one of his primary motivations behind making Dawn of Sorrow was to feature Soma Cruz in another game.[8] In regards to his current state, Igarashi claimed that Soma was still trying to cleanse the sorroundings of Dracula's soul as originally it was not evil.[9] Ayami Kojima was not included in the production team, as Igarashi wanted her to concentrate on her character designs for Castlevania: Curse of Darkness.[8] Soma, along with the remainder of the characters, were redrawn in an anime style. This was a marketing strategy Igarashi wished to employ, as he felt that the Nintendo DS' target demographic was significantly younger than those of other consoles Castlevania games had appeared on, and he intended to court them with a more simplistic anime design.[8][10] [11]
Appearances[edit]
Soma is introduced in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow as a high school student in Japan, living peacefully with his childhood friend Mina Hakuba.[12] He is drawn into Dracula's castle, where he learns of his "power of dominance", enabling him to absorb the souls of the monsters he defeats and use their abilities.[13] As he proceeds through Dracula's castle, he learns that the vampire Dracula, had been defeated, and that a prophecy had been made dictating that Dracula's powers would be passed down to his reincarnation.[14] After defeating Graham Jones, who had harbored the notion that he was Dracula's reincarnation, Soma realizes that he himself is Dracula's reincarnation.[15] As a result, he is confronted by Julius Belmont, the latest member of the Belmont clan, a group of vampire hunters sworn to hunt Dracula until his demise.[16] Soma defeats Julius, and extracts a promise from him to slay him should he fail to subdue Dracula's spirit.[17] With the aid of the allies he encounters throughout the castle, he is able to escape his fate by defeating the manifestation of the castle's chaos.[18]
Soma's second appearance is in Dawn of Sorrow, where he returns into battle to combat Celia Fortner's cult, which seeks to kill Soma and revive the dark lord.[19] Although Soma believes that his powers have been lost, they awaken, and he proceeds to a replica of Dracula's castle in order to confront Celia's cult.[20] In the castle, Soma learns of the "dark lord's candidates", who were born on the day of Dracula's demise and possess supernatural powers as a result.[21] Soma manages to best the first candidate, Dmitrii Blinov, although he inadvertently absorbs Dmitrii's soul in the process.[22] Soma proceeds to defeat Dario Bossi in two instances, stripping him of his power after the conclusion of their second fight.[23] As a result, Celia slays a doppelgänger of Mina to induce Soma to become the dark lord, but fails due to a talisman Mina gave him earlier in the game.[24] Dmitrii's soul escapes from Soma's body into the doppelgänger, and he increases his powers, having copied Soma's power of dominance.[25] Soma manages to defeat his monstrous form "Menace", and realizes at the end of the game that his fate is his own to determine.[26] Soma additionally appears in the "Julius Mode" found in Dawn of Sorrow, where the storyline follows the assumption that Soma succumbed to his darker nature and became the new dark lord.[27] He is the final boss of Julius Mode.[28]
Soma is also a playable character in Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.[29] He appeared in the 2018 crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a collectible spirit. In 2021, he was added to Super Bomberman R during its second season.[30][31]
Reception[edit]
Soma's character has received praise and criticism from several video game publications. GameSpy noted that although Soma fell into the stereotypical role of "an effeminate-looking man who does all the slaying", the original scenario that Aria of Sorrow presented provided a better context for his character.[32] Destructoid in particular enjoyed the concept behind Soma's story for being a teenager with the powers of the franchise's villain.[33] The Escapist regarded Soma as a common example of the bishonen archetype as noted through his clothes and face while also praising Ayami Kojima's work. However, the writer still praised the power Soma shows off as it makes him fittin for him to be the reincarnation of Dracula.[34]
The fact that Soma was not a member of the Belmont clan, the protagonists of most Castlevania games, was lauded by IGN and RPGamer, with the latter commenting on how it contributed to the "depth" of the storyline.[35][36] The manner in which Soma's "power of dominance" was seen in the game was praised.[35][37] In describing his abilities, VG247 described Soma as a mix between Belmont and Alucard but with his own unique skills such as wielding different type of swords among other type of weapons.[38] Nintendo Blast further praised the final fight from Aria of Sorrow due to the climatic battle between Soma and the chaos of the Chaotic Realm, giving a satisfying conclusion to the character's arc and his bonds with his comrades.[39] Kotaku and Den of Geek regarded the fight between Soma and Julius Belmont as one of the best parts from Aria of Sorrow as it clash between two heroes, something that he likes seeing in several games. Den of Geek in particular, regarded Soma's and Julius' fight as one of the best ones in the entire franchise for the subversion of the handling of the Belmonts as not heroic while Soma is instead the shadow of the antagonist Dracula.[40][41]
Reviewers also complimented Soma's graphical representation.[32][42] The change to an anime design in Dawn of Sorrow was criticized.[43][44] Nevertheless, RPGFan felt that the story created around Soma was the best presented in the series since Symphony of the Night.[45] James Busby of GamesRadar rated his spirit as one of the best spirits in the game.[46]
In regards to his Dawn of Sorrow persona, Game Rant regarded him as one of the best bosses in the entire series for sharing several similarities with the Dracula from Symphony of the Night, most notably his transformation into a dragon-like monster just like the original vampire.[47] Polygon praised the original sprite given to Soma as it matches the already appealing Alucard design from Symphony of the Night which was released for a stronger console.[48] His eventual transformation into a villain was noted by the same website to stand out as the strongest villain in the entire franchise to the point the entire cast has to join forces to slay him.[49] Despite finding him as having the potential of surpassing Dracula, The Gamer felt that Soma's weak point, losing Mina, can be strong that the he loses his humanity to his dark powers and becomes a monster in contrast to other Castlevania protagonists standing as the second weakest fighter next to Julius Belont.[50]
In the book Incarnations of Dracula, RJ Aspeggen from Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences regarded Soma as one of the most unique incarnations of the vampire Dracula due to the potential he represents in the franchise as a whole; In contrast to previous versions of Dracula's character who is always portrayed as the evil, Soma is instead the hero who happens to be trying handle the power of the monster. The character has problems in handling his powers which makes him relatable to the player. This is further explored when the player may choose for Soma to give in and become Dracula, subsequently turning him evil and getting him killed by Adrian and another vampire hunter, ending the game. Soma can only remain the protagonist whilst he refuses to give in to his monstrousness and uses his monstrous powers for good. The character noted Soma was Mathias Cronqvist reincarnated as a common subject of discussion. However, Japanese nationality and heroic actions makes the Soma stand out on his own even if Konami used common tropes from Japanese manga and anime when creating him.[51] GousGamers regarded him as one of the best characters in the franchise for coming across as a kindhearted man who deals with his own darkness.[52]
The twist of Alucard being reincarnation of Dracula was praised by Comic Book Resources and cited parallels with the Dracula presented in MercurySteam's Lords of Shadow reboot involves Gabriel Belmont also being in conflict with his identity as a vampire but rather than fighting it like Soma, Gabriel embraces his role as the prince of darkness. Nevertheless, the writer praised Soma and Gabriel for coming across as unique protagonists as they have access to similar supernatural powers not present in previous protagonist while also getting into contact with the Belmont clan in order to protect the world form an evil being.[53] IGN also praised the new idea presented with Aria of Sorrow mainly from Igarashi's desire to give Castlevania a new state as shown through Soma's fashionable clothes that distance him from previous protagonists as a result of being from a futuristic time in contrast to other Castlevania protagonists as well as the twist that he is the reincarnated Dracula.[54]
One of the main developers from the Netflix Castlevania series, executive producer Adi Shankar, has expressed a desire in using Soma, considering him an "underrated" character. He further added "When you look at the story of Soma Cruz, and really what we're doing here, the difference between the gaming universe and the Castlevania cinematic universe, we are adding emotional depth, and to extrapolate from Soma Cruz there's a lot to unpack there -- and I’m not spoiling it, I’m just saying I personally just really dig Soma Cruz."[55] Such idea attracted the media with how Soma would be portrayed in future seasons with Screen Rant believing Soma's story has potential for attractive storytelling especially when combined with the animation of the Netflix series to the point Screen Rant called him the "best hero" in the franchise.[56][57][58] Soma's design was also a major influence for Bungie when creating human characters in the video game Destiny.[59]
While Igarashi stopped making Castlevania games when leaving Konami, Siliconera noted that for his game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the game designer reused concepts from Dracula's reincarnation into the new character Miriam. While Soma is the reincarnation of Dracula, Miriam's nature as a Shardbinder means she is subject to a curse that will overtake her body with crystals. She’s the pinnacle of the alchemists’ work and strongest Shardbinder. Similar to Soma's potential to become the story's villain, Mirian can follow a similar path. However, the website found the other ending which takes elements from Symphony of the Night's storyline to be the one with the better concept than Soma's corruption.[60]
