H L Somany started a company called Somany Pilkington's, in 1969 which later became Somany Ceramics. In 1971, the company’s first unit started production in Kassar Haryana. The second unit started in 1981.The group stepped in retailing and sanitaryware space with a separate division called Aquaware in 2007. Somany Ceramics entered into a joint venture with Keraben under the brand name Synergy, which got a patent for VC technology. This was the first in Indian Ceramics industry.

Somany Ceramics in the last 4 decades spread its presence across India, Africa, The Middle East, United Kingdom and Russia. It is the one of the largest player in the tiles segment in India, with nearly 14 percent market share in the organized segment, according to an IIFL report. The company has 60 percent, the highest share of outsourced manufacturing among other listed building material companies.

Somany Ceramics in 2016 had a sanitaryware plant under a subsidiary Somany Sanitary Ware Pvt. Ltd, with a capacity of 303,000 pieces per annum. For tiles, the company had a capacity of 60 million sq. m per annum, the figure was through outsourcing and from its own plants and subsidiary plants. Shri Shreekant Somany is the present CMD and Shri Abhishek Somany the MD of the company.
