Son Soul Brothers was an Iranian rock band prominent from 1974 to 1976. The group was formed in 1971 in Abadan by Keyboardist Mehdi Khashe and lead singer and guitarist Martik Kanian and drummer Mohammad Moradi.[4] Guitarist Behrouz Lari and bassist Firouz Sarkarde were later joined by Mohammad Moradi. But the group changed many members until the end of its career. Son Soul Brothers were at the core of the music movement called "Tehran Sound".

until the end of its operation in 1977, Son Soul Brothers sold three million throughout Iran and Turkey.[5][6] singles, of which six were top 40 hits, Including three big hits in the top ten: "Cheshmaye To", "Silk" and "Sunrise from West".[7] Son Soul Brothers has had a significant impact on Iranian rock music. Son Soul Brothers was the only successful rock band before the Iranian Revolution.[8] Son Soul Brothers was one of the most Mainstream bands in Iranian psychedelic rock.[9] The band created new ways for Iranian rock music.[10] The group had plenty of success until 1976, but due to a dispute between Mehdi Khashe and Martik that led to Martik separation, led to the end of the core lineup. The group was eventually disbanded in 1977. Today, the band is compared to Small Faces in terms of creativity in creating lasting songs like "Cheshmaye To".[11][12][13]

History

Early years

Origins (1968 - 1970)

The Apollo years (1971 - 1972)

In 1971, Martik and Mehdi Khashe left the Mehdi Rahmati Orchestra and decided to form a band. Khashe contacted his drummer friend, Mohammad Moradi, asking him to be on the new band.[14] They needed only a bass player and a guitar to complete the set. Moradi invited two people, Firouz Sarkarde and Behrouz Lari, to join the group.[15] After the group was completed, they entered into a contract with Apollo. The band's first album, Son Soul Brothers, was released in 1971 and received no positive feedback.[16] The album's defeat replaced Firouz Sarkarde with Hossein Hosseini. The band's second album, Wineglass, was released the following year, which failed as much as the first album. The commercial failure of the band's second album resulted in the replacement of Behrouz Lari with Ardeshir Shirazi.

Adam & Eve (1973)

In 1973 the Son Soul Brothers decided to make a big change. They terminated their contract with Apollo and signed contract with Beethoven Records. At this time Martik met Googoosh. Googoosh was interested in joining this group and with the consensus of Googoosh members became a member.[17] The band's third album, Adam & Eve, was released in 1973, which became a huge success. The two single "Adam & Eve" and "The poet" reached number 15 and 11, respectively.[18] That same year, Ardeshir Shirazi left the group and Ardavan Sufi replaced him.

That same year, Son Soul Brothers participated in the Amjadieh Music Festival, and the songs performed at the festival were released on the album Live in Amjadieh Music Festival.[19] The single on the Live in Amjadieh Music Festival album, "The Life Collection", reached number 28. Googoosh left the band that same year to continue his solo career. Googoosh's presence in the band caused the Son Soul Brothers to become somewhat of a Glam Rock style, although with the departure of Googoosh, Glam Rock also dropped out of Son Soul Brothers.

Peak years (1974 - 1976)

In 1974, Hossein Hosseini was expelled and Ahmed Hammat replaced him. The album Like a Knight, released in 1974, became a huge success. The album sold a lot with two singles, "Rock And Roll" and "Cheshmaye To". "Rock And Roll" was a song inspired by rock and roll songs from the 1950s[20] that reached number 17. "Cheshmaye To", Son Soul Brothers' most successful work, is one of the works of Psychedelic rock in Iran.[21] Cheshmaye To is Son Soul Brothers' most successful single. Son Soul Brothers participated in several festivals that year. Also on the album was "Empty Your Anger", which was one of the most important hard rock songs in Iran.[22] Mehdi Khashe explains that once on a trip to Canada, he listened to the Born to Be Wild song by the hard rock band Steppenwolf and wrote Empty your Anger under the influence of Born to Be Wild.[23][24]

After the great success of the album Like a Knight, the album Silk was released which was the peak of the band's success. On the album Silk, unlike previous albums, Martik Kanian wrote the lyrics of the album, though some of the songs are by other poets.[25] "Sunrise From West" and "Silk" were two of the album's single tracks, both written by Martik. At the time of the album's release, Babak Ashkan was added to the band as a guitarist and left the band late that year due to a dispute with Mehdi Khashe. The next single Son Soul Brothers was Pastime Paradise.
