Search Sonic Speed Simulator on Amazon.Sonic Speed Simulator[lower-alpha 2] is a massively multiplayer online platform game developed by Gamefam Studios, and published by Gamefam x Sonic under license and in-association with Sega of America on the gaming and game development platform Roblox. The game features the player moving their character and collecting crystals or rings, or jumping into loops around the map to gain XP, which by leveling up, allows the player to increase their speed. While doing so, they can also unlock different zones, characters, trails, pets and mounts.
It is the first entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to be available on Roblox (not counting Nickelodeon's Nickverse crossover) and the second licensed simulator game on the platform after Dr. Seuss Simulator.[lower-alpha 3]
Gameplay[edit]
When the player first joins the game, they are greeted to the game's title screen, where a 3D model of Sonic the Hedgehog is depicted waving his finger around in front of a golden ring, with a start button seen below. Once the player begins the game by pressing start, they spawn in Green Hill Zone, which serves as the game's hub world. Players can then walk around and collect crystals and rings around the map. Collecting more crystals around the map gives the player more XP to help level up, which then increases their walkspeed, and also makes it easier to run around loops. Another way to earn XP is by running and jumping into hoops. The player can also participate in races against other users in the server, as well as completing mini obbies where after completion, will be allowed access to a newly discovered zone where players can also find character card fragments which can be used to unlock other characters such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails the Fox, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose.[1][2][3][4] Additionally the player can also unlock other characters and mounts by completing missions and purchase items such as trails and Chaos, which increase the player's stats.[5][6]
History[edit]
On April 14, 2022, days ahead of the public launch of the game, a tweet was posted by Gamefam Studios on Twitter stating that their team had recently visited the offices of Sega of America to discuss plans for the future of the game during a secret meeting.[7]
During the Sonic Central 2022 presentation shown on June 7, it was announced that a new area of Chemical Plant Zone would be released on June 11. Additionally a code for the Amy Chao was unveiled and became available later that same day.[8]
On February 26, 2023, a new feature was added to the game, known as "Auto Run", where the player automatically runs around the entire map, and collects rings and XP without any control over their character. Many players expressed disappointment with this update, citing the slower pace, not being able to jump or go side-to-side, and the rewards system as downsides.[9]
Promotional events[edit]
From December 10 through December 16, 2022, players could attend a special early screening of the then-upcoming first episode of the Sonic Prime television series before its initial Netflix debut. To promote the event, Gamefam Studios partnered with Roblox Corporation by allowing users the ability to earn Nine's Mechanical Arms in the form of a virtual UGC accessory.[10][11][12]
Release[edit]
The game's beta phase began on April 13, 2022, to users who purchased the game for 50 Robux with the game finally being released to the public for free on December 16, 2021.[13] Additionally paid beta testers unlocked the Knuckles Chao, which was later made obtainable again during the treasure hunt event.[14][15] In just two days, the game achieved a total of 100,000 concurrent users, becoming one of the most popular games on the platform.[16]
Reception[edit]
Alan Wen of Eurogamer gave the game a positive review, saying that "It's probably the most polished experience to have graced Roblox so far", and after unlocking a character, "Sonic Speed Simulator starts to feel like a Sonic game, and a surprisingly good one at that", although went on to state that after an hour of playing through it, there is "–not a whole lot else to do — at least nothing that's anything as compelling."[17] Meanwhile, Alexander I. A. of Omni Geek Empire gave a more critical review of the game, noting that the gameplay became less fun the more the player progressed, considered the racing maps to be "abysmal", and that by flying off the maps, it could become "-tedious and annoying", but ultimately decided not to give the game a score due to it's "-free-to-play and constantly updating" nature.[18]
Controversy[edit]
Throughout the month of December 2022, several allegations were brought up by numerous ex-employees who had worked on the game and raised concerns online in-regards to Gamefam Studios overworking, underpaying, as well as laying off some of their employees before the holiday season. As a result, many concerned fans began the hashtag #SonicSweatshopSimulator on Twitter in an effort to bring attention to allegations. In response, the company began banning users from its Discord server who mentioned the issues.[19]
The situation went as far to prompt Deven Mack, the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog in the Sonic Prime television series, to speak forward on Twitter regarding the situation, and spread awareness to the game's developers by stating "Saddened to hear this. Employees deserve fair pay."[20]
In early April 2023, it had been revealed that the studio settled a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) complaint with an employee who filed a lawsuit earlier in January when the company "retaliated" against the individual for discussing payment concerns with fellow developers. The employee was then paid $5,000 USD in bonuses, and Gamefam was legally obligated to remind its employees of their rights.[21][22]

Notes[edit]
- ↑ Under license from Sega of America.
- ↑ The in-game title was updated to become Sonic Speed Simulator: Reborn on February 10, 2023, however this change has yet to be reflected on game's page on the Roblox website.
- ↑ Although Angry Birds: Bird Island was created before Sonic Speed Simulator, it wasn't until the latter released that Bird Island was temporarily re-branded as a simulator, later retitled Angry Birds: Mayhem Simulator. These changes have since been undone, and Mayhem Simulator now serves as a sub-experience within Bird Island.
