Background[edit]
Members of S.O.S, Moses "Mo" Samuels and Mikey Akin, are both of Nigerian descent and are from the United Kingdom. They are currently based in Los Angeles, California. At very young ages, they practiced their talents within the school and church buildings that they attended. Mikey began playing the drums at age five, while Mo started the keys at age six.[2] They came together in 2009 at a church retreat. The two decided to become a duo, hoping to gain opportunity and attention.[3] Under the guidance of Mo Samuels' brother Harmony Samuels, a Grammy-nominated record producer, they began working their way into the industry by producing tracks.
Music Career[edit]
The pair have secured tracks with artists such as former Spice Girl Melanie C and fellow Londoner Wretch 32. It is with Wretch 32 that S.O.S secured their first UK top 10 chart entry with the track 6 Words. Since then, the duo have continued to work with Wretch 32. In 2016, They produced nine tracks on Wretch's third studio album, Growing Over Life including All a Dream which features Knox Brown. They also worked on Wretch 32's fourth studio album FR32, where they participated in nine out of twelve total tracks in the album. The album was released in October 2017, and peaked at number 12 on The Official U.K. Albums Chart.[4] Most recently, the duo worked on Wretch 32's album Little Big Man (stylized little BIG Man) which was released in 2021.[5]
The musical team also has international collaborations with Trey Songz, Ariana Grande, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Tinie Tempah under their belt.[6] They have also worked with British rapper Stormzy, producing the track Birthday Girl in 2016, as well as two tracks on the 2017 album Gang Signs & Prayer. In 2019 the duo worked on a track for Jennifer Lopez & French Montana titled Medicine. The song reached number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, and remained on the chart for a total of 14 weeks.[7] The duo has also produced tracks like Side Effects by Ty Dolla $ign, and more recently Confirmation from Justin Bieber's 2020 Changes album. Confirmation briefly entered the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 at number 96.[8]
In 2018, Sons of Sonix released their first single Full Speed featuring rapper Verse Simmonds, starting their venture as not only producers, but artists as well. They have since released two other songs, Money with Kida Kudz and Teni and Numb with Melanie C.
In February 2022, they worked with the artist Tai on a single titled Sipping on Fame.[9] The song was then featured on Netflix’s Inventing Anna, during the show’s second episode titled “The Devil Wore Anna”.[10]
