The Sony WH-1000X is a flagship line of wireless over-ear Bluetooth headphones with active noice cancelling designed by Sony. The first model was released in October 2016 and was named MDR-1000X. The following models in the line use a different naming scheme: WH-1000XMx, where "WH" stands for "wireless headband".[1]

MDR-1000X[edit]

The original MDR-1000X announced on September 1, 2016 and launched in October, 2016.[2] The launch price was $399.99.

WH-1000XM2[edit]

The second model changed it's naming scheme to WH-1000XM2. It was released in June, 2017 with launch price $349.[3] The new model received AptX HD codec support and improved battery life.

WH-1000XM3[edit]

WH-1000XM3 was announced on August 30, 2018[4] and released in October, 2018 with the same launch price $349 as previous model has.[5] This model switched to Bluetooth 4.2 and USB Type-C.

WH-1000XM4[edit]

WH-1000XM4 was announced on August 06, 2020[6] and released in the same month. Slightly improved model received Bluetooth 5.0 support.

WH-1000XM5[edit]

The WH-1000XM5 headphones were announced on May 12, 2022[7] and released on May 20, 2018 with increased $399 launch price. This model lost NFC one-touch connection which previous models have. The model received mixed reviews. Despite the excellent noise cancellation and sound quality, the earbuds no longer fold, and the driver unit size is reduced to 30mm.[8]
