Sooraj Surendran is an Indian technologist and an electronic engineering graduate from Anna University .[2] He made significant contributions to the development of the motorized wheelchair.[3]
Early life and education
Sooraj was born in Kollam, Kerala, India.[2] His mother Sudha was an housewife and his father, K Surendran Pillai.[4] Sooraj Completed Schooling in Sree Buddha, a Central Board of Secondary Education school in Karunagappalli, Kerala. He earned his degree from Anna University in electronic engineering.[5]
Career
After graduating from Anna University with a BTech in electronic engineering 2011, He started working in motorized wheelchair design and nursing care bed electronic unit design. He published an paper for intelligent reverse sensor in motorized wheelchair[6][7] and developed an electronic system for nursing care bed with the help of advanced Bluetooth technology. Here all functions of nursing care bed can be controlled through an Android application.[8] Sooraj was invited for the development of light weight motorized wheelchair electronic control unit as a part of Tamil Nadu motorized wheelchair distribution for 2000 people.[9][8]
Projects
Motorized wheelchair
Sooraj contributions to the motorized wheelchair industry is more. Sooraj classified motorized wheelchair on the basis of DC motor wattage and the control unit used. Every time, he made research for making a user friendly motorized wheelchair. He interacted with the motorized wheelchair users for more than three years.[4] and identified their problem for customizing the motorized wheelchair. Interactions made him for electronic control unit developments. He developed an electronic control unit for motorized wheelchair seat lifting mechanism.[5] Seat Lifting is controlled by an actuator. He given the dual controlling facility,[5] controls in arm-side joystick and an additional optional for Bluetooth Low Energy Connectivity. Android mobile phone can be paired with Bluetooth and user attender can also access the system from limited range. For development and user safety, he implemented the use of intelligent reverse sensor technology in motorized wheelchair.[6] By this motorized wheelchair will automatically detect the obstacles behind and notify the user with alarm or beep sound.
Through his research, he developed a low cost smart motorized wheelchair electronic control unit.[3] Developed low cost smart electronic control unit is having the auto cutoff facility for high temperature and auto wake up, when the system get cooled. With the inbuilt battery management system, rechargeable battery is charged through the calculated current and thus safeguard the batteries of the Motorized wheelchair. Dual interface option is available; one is smartphone connected system[10] and second is by joystick.
