He is also a graduate of the School of Higher Physics and Philosophy of Science of Democritus. He is the founder, among others, of Xini Schools (1974), KEAS Xinis (1977), Mediterranean College (1977) and IIEK Xini (1993). Finally, it is a supporter and major sponsor of the Olympiacos Handball team/Xini Group.

Case IIEK Xini[edit]

In 2016, the operating licenses of IEK Xini and Mediterranean College were revoked, but the Xini Group, through changes in the names of other companies, allegedly tried to circumvent the ministerial decisions against it, mainly,[1] as reported in the press, "with the vehicle of the acquisition of a share by IEK Alpha".[2][3] Sophocles Xinis and members of his family were set to stand trial in April 2018 on the basis of a ruling accusing them "of falsifying insurance clearances in order to collect money from the State and to keep the licenses of IEK Xini in force" After another postponement, the case was set to be heard in December 2019.[4]

The Xini side claimed that all the noise was created by "competing IEKs" in cooperation with friendly "electronic and print media."[1]  A similar position had been taken for the revocation of operating licenses, which had been described as "unfair", stating that the Ministry of Education had been "a victim [...] erroneous suggestion by officials", who adopted "views of a competing Group".[5]

The Fifth Three-Member Felony Court of Appeals in June 2021 sentenced Xinis to four years in prison with suspension for "the offense of inciting the repeated preparation of false insurance documents".[6]
