Souman Bose (Bengali: সৌমন বোস) (Born 24 August 1990) is an Indian actor and writer well known for his roles in famous Bengali films, Web series and, unconventional feature and short films.[1]

Career[edit]

Bose began making short independent films while in school, garnering awards at various students' film festivals. After briefly assisting the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Jeffrey D. Brown he started work on his maiden feature film, Kash, as an actor, writer & director. The film took three years to complete, primarily for the lack of funds. After watching the two and a half hours long first rough cut of the film, the sound designer Dipankar Jojo Chaki joined as a co-producer and helped with the film's post-production.[2] Kash is considered to be Calcutta's first mumblecore feature film.[3] It saw a limited theatrical release and was also invited to La Nacional Spanish Benevolent Society, as a part of the Bronx World Film cycle, and received favorable reviews from the festival. Walter Krochmal wrote that "Kash is a transcendent piece of poetic art house cinema, that clamours for a global audience".[4][5][6]

In 2014, Bose wrote, shot, directed, edited & produced an experimental black and white thriller, Replication (Pratikriti), that won the best film prize at LKSE 2, an international film competition organised by Pocket Films. Bose has also designed ads for various corporate entities.

He received favourable notice for his role as the antagonist in Addatimes finite series In Their life, where Bose was seen in another leading role, sharing screen space opposite the veteran actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty.

In 2018 he produced and acted in the Rohoshyo Romancho Series, an anthology feature film, which features other well known actors such as Priyanka Sarkar, Rudranil Ghosh, Kanchan Mallick, Saayoni Ghosh, Biswanath Basu, amongst others. The film was released on 9 August 2019 as a five part series on MX Player,Hoichoi & Prime Video. Bose's performance as the character of Arjun was praised by the critics and well received by the viewers. All About Bangla Cinema Org. wrote "among the newer actors it is Souman Bose who has grabbed all the attention. This film will certainly help this talent get noticed".[7] Aritra Banerjee of Film Companion Local, while favorably reviewing the film on his channel, particularly praised Bose's acting skills and comic timing.

Bose's next leading role was as the protagonist of Bus Stop, from the anthology Bhalobashar Shohor 2, produced by Zee5. The film was released in 2019. Bus Stop was ranked 1 in the list of top 10 bangla films streaming on Zee5 premium[8] Bose received critical acclaim and favorable attention from viewers for playing the character of Neel, which was loosely based on a real life person, who makes a film in order to find his lost love.[9] In the same year, Bose made a special appearance in an extended cameo in Bengal's first zombie feature film, entitled Zombiesthaan.

Bose's next release as a solo lead was Liplock, produced by Addatimes & Surinder Films. In this series, he essayed the complex role of Varun who has an alter ego named Vron. In an interview, Bose cited that Liplock, in the guise of a horror-thriller, is a black comedy/socio-political satire making an indirect commentary on the shallow frivolities of social media. The show was released in February 2020. Although the series received mixed to positive reviews, Bose's consistent portrayal of the character received approval.[10]

Bose played Souvik, Sayantika’s colleague and friend, philosopher and guide,[11] in the feature film Brohmbhodoityo. Produced in early 2019, the film was set for a theatrical release in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was directly released on the OTT platform Hoichoi. Jaya Biswas of the Times of India wrote "Souman Bose as Sayantika’s friend and colleague pulls it off well."[12] Furthermore, Mukesh Jha of AllAboutBanglaCinema.org wrote "Souman Bose who has impressed everyone in Rohoshyo Romancho Series, season 1 is in a good form. He has nothing much to do here as he in not the central character but still he has managed to grab attention specially in his opening scene."[13]

Bose will also be seen essaying the character of the legendary writer & Soumitra Chatterjee’s close friend and creative partner in Abhijaan: The Soumitra Chatterjee biopic & as ASI Ajit Roy alongside Tnusree Chakraborty in the Zee5 original double murder mystery thriller Nirbandham’er Jora Khun.
