Soumita Saha is an Indian playback singer/composer, eminent Painter and social activist. She is known for her contribution to Rabindra Sangeet as well as the song Ishq, considered a revolutionary work in the EDM genre.

Early life and education

Soumita was born and raised in Kolkata, West Bengal to parents working in the Bengali Film Industry. Her father Swapan Saha is a noted Rabindra Sangeet exponent, while her mother Madhumita Saha is an Entertainment Critic. Her native language is Bangla; she also speaks English and Hindi. She completed her schooling from St. John's Diocesan Girls' Higher Secondary School and later pursued a degree in Architecture from Delhi University.

During her early days, she released a song compiled and inspired by Gajendra Verma's Emptiness, which went viral on the Internet and brought her popularity. Since then, she has appeared in various TV Shows like Geet Sangeet by Channel Vision and several other shows on Rupashi Bangla, ETV Bangla and OM Bangla Television's Gaan Bangla Show. She has also performed on Big FM as well as Jadavpur University Community Radio. She bagged several small screen playback offers. The singer lent her voice to the popular Bangla series Sahityer sera shomoy. She later made her debut in the international world of music with the EDM number Ishq released from bigtunes records, Miami. She has also sung for many Bangla movies. Recently she lent her voice to an item song for the movie O my love released in April 2020. She is known for her contribution to Tagore's songs. Some of her Rabindra Sangeet renditions were released from The Aatman Audio in 2019. Soumita is a skilled painter, her paintings get exhibited across most major cities in the country and abroad.

Singing career

She gained initial popularity as a Rabindra Sangeet singer. Her Rabindra Sangeet works include Nisarga Madhuri, Aay tobe Shohochori, Gram Chhara oi Ranga Matir Poth, Amaro Porano Jaha Chay, Tomar Khola Hawa and Woh Din Suhana. In the pop genre, her first major breakthrough came with the song Ishq, which was released in February 2018. The song was marketed by BigTunes Records from Miami, United States. Rising the ladder of popularity, Soumita bagged Playback offers for Tollywood. She sang for many Tollywood movies. Recently she lent her voice to a song in the movie O my Love. Earlier she sang for the popular Bengali series Sahityer Sera shomoy aired in 2017. Soumita gifted a melodious Pop cover song from the hit pops of the 1980s sung by Debbie Gibson. The song " Out of The Blue " was not only appreciated by the audience but Debbie Gibson herself showered gesture of appreciation for Soumita. Soumita is a successful playback singer who sang for many Bengali movies. She is mostly known for her versatility; her latest work is an item song that she sang for the movie ওহ তাই লাভ that released in 2019.

Social activism

Saha has been vocal about various issues in society, especially those related to women's empowerment. In April 2018, she vehemently opposed Kerala-based Professor Rajith Kumar calling women as transgenders. She argued that if wearing jeans makes a person transgender, then western countries should have transgenders only. In the aftermath of the Kathua Rape and Murder Incident, she dedicated a poem in support of the victim Asifa. She also supported model and lyricist Gilu Joesph in the Grihalakshmi Controversy by demanding dedicated breastfeeding rooms in places like Malls and Multiplexes. In the controversy surrounding actress Swara Bhaskar for the movie Veere Di Wedding, she openly argued that if society can accept on-screen sex then it would be wrong to object on-screen masturbation.
