South Tirupathi alias Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal temple is a Hindu Vaishnavite temple dedicated to God Vishnu, located in Thirumalai Vaiyavoor, Madurantakam taluk, Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, India.[1] The temple is said to be famous for Aadhi Varaaha Swamy, Aadhi Varaaha Kshetram and Aadhi Varaaha Pushkarani. It is situated in the direction of South with respect to Tirupathi and resembles some of the poojas performed there and hence the name. It is differently named such as Dakshina Garudagiri, Vaigundagiri, Dakshina Seshagiri, Varaaha Kshetram, Dakshina Venkatagiri and Ramanuja Yogagiri.

Location[edit]

This temple is located on a small hillock, 75 km from Chennai, and 20 km from Chengalpattu, on the way to Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary and at the coordinates of 12°35'47"N 79°53'32"E of Earth. Because it is situated on the hillock, the neighbourhoods seem to be scenic beauty.

Legend[edit]

In the episode of Ramayan, while fighting with the enemy Ravana, one of the brothers of Rama viz., Lakshman, got fainted and tired and to recover from the illness, Rama suggested his friend Hanuman to bring holy hill 'Sanjeevi' with medicinal values, without keeping anywhere. On the way bringing the hill, Hanuman visited this hillock of temple of Lord Venkatesa. On remembering the hill to be kept nowhere else, Hanuman shifted the Sanjeevi hill from one hand to the other, while worshipping the God here, and did not keep the hill on the grounds. This leads to the name of this place, Thirumalai Vaiyaavoor (meaning, place of holy hill not kept on grounds).

In one of His Avtars, viz., Varaaha avtar, Lord Vishnu after defeating the powerful king Hiranya, He told Garuda to bring a mountain from holy Vaikundam. Garuda, on his return with the mountain, placed the mountain on the banks of the river Swarnamuki in Tirupathi Hills and a piece of it fell near river Paali. Lord granted a separate Varaaha darshan to Garuda here as he had not seen the darshan earlier before. Hence the names of the place also (Varaaha Kshetram/Vaikundagiri/Dakshina Garudagiri).[2]

History[edit]

A king of Thondaiman dynasty prayed Lord Venkatesa (Srinivasa) to safeguard his vast lands from his enemies and thieves. By observing the request of His devotee, the Lord protected his belongings by defeating the opponents. As a thanking gesture, the king built this temple dedicating it to the Lord. In turn, He granted darshan to the king, with his scepter, a symbol of king.

King Abharajitha Varma Pallava who built the 'Venkatesa Perumal Temple, Tirupathi', contributed much to this temple.

King Thodarmal of Vijayanagara Empire was a devotee to this temple and he donated a lot to the development of the temple.

Vaishnavite sage Ramanujar, who lived 1,000 years ago in Tamil Nadu, visited this temple and performed yoga here and thereafter this temple is also being called as Ramanuja Yogagiri.[3]
