Soyung Lee(Korean: 이소영) is a South Korean illustrator. "Lee" is her family name. She was named an Illustrator of the Year at the 2014 Bologna Children's Book Fair with Beyond the Shadow.[1] Ian, the Blue Boy was chosen as a 2019 IBBY Outstanding Book for Young People with Disabilities[2], and The Chimney Ghost and My Summer, was selected to represent Korea at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (BIB) in 2019[3] and 2021[4], respectively. My Summer, was also a White Ravens Book of 2021. Lee has illustrated a number of other picture books, and says that she creates picture books "for the benefit of all."

Life

Soyung Lee graduated from the Seoul National University Department of Design, and subsequently matriculated from the Ensaama (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art) Oliver de Serres DSAA program in Paris, France. She worked as a graphic designer in Korea for five years. [5] Her first book, Beyond the Shadow, was a product of her participation in the SangSang Madang program for illustrators aimed at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. This provided a natural opportunity for her to change track from editorial design to picture book creation.[6] Afterwards, she departed for France again to pursue in-depth studies in the field of picture books at the University of Paris I, studying crossover picture books and trying her hand at the genre as well. Beyond the Shadow led to her being named as an Illustrator of the Year at the 2014 Bologna Children's Book Fair, and since then, she has illustrated a number of children's books and picture books, including Ian, the Blue Boy, My Summer, and The Chimney Ghost. She returned to Korea in 2021, and meets with her readers and exhibits her work at libraries and museums regularly.

Career

Lee was chosen as an Illustrator of the Year at the 2014 Bologna Children's Book Fair with her first book, Beyond the Shadow. Ian, the Blue Boy was chosen as an IBBY Outstanding Book for Young People with Disabilities, and led to her being invited as the author representing the KBBY Korean Pavilion at the 2018 Guadalajara International Book Fair.[7] The Chimney Ghost and My Summer, was selected to represent Korea at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (BIB) in 2019 and 2021, respectively. My Summer, was also a White Ravens Book of 2021. Lee's books were also published in France: Ici, ensemble et maintenant was published by Editions Thierry Magnier in 2020, and Ce n'est pas grave, mon crapaud was published by Éditions des éléphants in 2021. Both books were also translated into Korean, and It's Okay, My Toad was published in China, Italy, Spain, and Sweden as well. Ce n'est pas grave, mon crapaud received a number of awards in France; it was selected for Le Prix Millepages 2021, and in 2023, it was the recipient (Lauréat) of Le Prix Livrentête 2023, an award organized by Bibliothèque pour tous (Prix littéraire jeunesse de l’association culture et Bibliothèque pour tous), for picture books for ages 5 and older. The title also received the Lauréat at Le Prix Tatoulu for picture books for ages 5 and older. Lee actively participates in solo and group picture book exhibitions at libraries and museums.

Style

Soyung Lee uses symbolic colors in her picture books. In My Summer, the intense heat of summer is expressed in vibrant shades of red.[8] When Winter comes, another book on the seasons following My Summer, relies on blue and grey tones to convey the chill of winter. The winter landscape, rendered wet on wet in watercolor, imparts a cold yet dreamy feel.[9] Lee's picture books also excel at expressing emotions through the symbolism of color: her stories present difficult emotions such as envy, rage, and guilt in colors that make them easier for children to understand. In Bright Red Shade of Envy, the use of three colors, red, blue, and black, give the story more dimension. It's Okay, My Toad depicts the outgoing, sociable toad in white, and the quiet introvert in red.[10] In Ian, the Blue Boy, the contrast between monochromatic pencil lines and hues blue and red is used to express the protagonist's inner world and feelings, propelling the story forward. Lee makes use of a variety of techniques, including pencil, lithography, screen printing, watercolor, and monotype depending on the story she is working on, producing picture books saturated with colors uniquely her own.[11]
