Spam Javelin is a Welsh punk band, formed in 2015 in North Wales. The band consists of Neil Crud (lead vocals, guitar), Tracey Howarth (bass) and Llion Broadbent (drums).

History[edit]

2015-2016: Beginnings and Nazi Line Dancers[edit]

The initial line-up was Steve Brute (bass), Neil Crud (guitar) and Gwion Griffiths (drums). Neil and Gwion had played together in the Welsh punk band Braxton Hicks.[1] and Steve was in Colwyn Bay hardcore band Global Parasite [2]. The trio made their live debut at The Cross Foxes[3] in Prestatyn, North Wales on 17 July 2015; the day of the release of their debut EP How Can You Die When You're Already Dead which was described as "an uncompromising masterpiece" by Louder Than War (website)[4].

The song How Can You Die When You're Already Dead also appeared on the cover CD of Vive Le Rock (magazine) in September 2015.[5]. They played several gigs around North Wales and the North West of England with bands like Stiff Little Fingers and Steak Number Eight. On 25 April 2016, Spam Javelin released a 7" split EP with Conwy based grindcore band Emissaries Of Syn. Spam's contribution included crowd favourite Nazi Line Dancers Fuck Off.

2017-2018: Line up changes and Arseholageddon[edit]

A lack of gigs during the first half of 2017 and Steve Brute's absence from the line-up betrayed that changes were on the way for Spam Javelin. Neil Crud had to assemble a makeshift band to play gigs in Czech Republic and Leipzig during August.[6]. During the same month Steve announced on his Facebook page that due to family constraints he was leaving the band and wished the new line-up well.

Tracey Howarth permanently joined Spam Javelin, having stood-in for Steve for a number of gigs. On 21 November 2017, they released Arseholageddon EP recorded in Snowdonia by John Lawrence (musician) (ex-Gorky's Zygotic Mynci). The artwork was done by Steve Brute.[7]

The band played regular gigs throughout 2018[8], but in a similar pattern to losing their bassist, several stand-in drummers were used. No new material was released, although a compilation of the first 3 EPs emerged on CD as 12 Golden Greats on 12 October 2018[9]

2019: Crack Whores and Deportation[edit]

By the start of 2019, Llion Broadbent from Talysarn had permanently replaced Gwion on drums and Spam Javelin began rehearsals toward releasing an LP. They released their 'proper' debut album The Crack Whores Of Betws Garmon on 8 July 2019 on Neil Crud's own link2wales label. Recorded in spring 2019 at Orange Studios in Penmaenmawr, North Wales and mixed by Russ Hayes, 'Crack Whores' was released in vinyl, CD and download formats. Planet Mosh website described it as "a steam train that punches through your chest".[10] Spam Javelin played many gigs to promote the album [8] including shows in Belfast and Dublin. Also included was a 4 date tour of the USA with American rapper Coolzey. They travelled covertly on normal visas but were apprehended by US Immigration Control at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and after interrogation were deported to Iceland [11].

2020–present: The Three Chords Of The Apocalypse[edit]

During lockdown the band released two tracks on their bandcamp page, a version of D.O.A. (band) song Fuck You along with Cogged Off[12]. The latter track, like several that were suitable for broadcast, was played on BBC Radio Wales by DJ Adam Walton[13]. On 2 August 2020 Spam Javelin's Facebook page announced they had been recording their second album The Three Chords Of The Apocalypse[14], which they released on vinyl the following January.
