Spiekeroog III
Spiekeroog III is a former German passenger ferry that served the East Frisian island of Spiekeroog from the mainland port of Neuharlingersiel. Built in 1967 by Husumer Schiffswerft, it entered service on 1 April 1967 for Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH.[1][2] After being sold in 2013, the vessel was converted for hospitality use and now operates as a floating restaurant in Leer, Lower Saxony.[3][4]
History
Spiekeroog III was completed in 1967 at Husumer Schiffswerft in Husum as yard number 1244.[2] It was delivered in March 1967 and entered service on 1 April 1967 on the Spiekeroog–Neuharlingersiel route.[1]
During a storm in January 1976, the vessel broke loose from the quay at Spiekeroog and drifted before grounding on Minsener Oog. It was later refloated and returned to service.[1]
The ship was sold in 2013 and converted for use as a restaurant vessel.[1]
Design and characteristics
Public ship registries list Spiekeroog III as 153 gross tons, with a length of 33.56 metres and a beam of 6.99 metres.[5][6]
The vessel is powered by a single diesel engine driving one propeller and has a service speed of about 11.5 knots.[2]
Service
From 1967 until the introduction of newer vessels, Spiekeroog III was part of the ferry connection between Spiekeroog and the mainland.[1]
After its conversion, it remained in use as a permanently moored restaurant ship in Leer.[3][4]
