SpikeCon was a science fiction convention that jointly served as the 13th occasional North American Science Fiction Convention (NASFiC), the 72nd Westercon, and two smaller, fandom-specific conventions. It was held in Layton, Utah from July 4-7, 2019, at the Davis Conference Center.[1] This NASFiC was scheduled because Dublin, Ireland was selected as the location for the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention.

Guests of honor[edit]

Because the event was "four cons in one," each individual convention had its own guests of honor.[2]

NASFiC[edit]

Westercon[edit]

  • Special Guest: Eric Flint
  • Theater Special Guest: Dewey Douglas

Information[edit]

SpikeCon was advertised as "four cons in one." In addition to the North American Science Fiction Convention, the event was also designated as Westercon 72, MantiCon 2019 (for fans of David Weber's Honorverse), and a 1632 "Minicon" (for fans of Eric Flint's 1632 series).

Site selection[edit]

At the 75th World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) in Helsinki, Finland, Dublin was selected as the winning bid for the 77th Worldcon to be held in 2019. As a result, the World Science Fiction Society determined that a North American Science Fiction Convention (NASFiC) would also be held in 2019, as is the case when a Worldcon is held overseas. At the 76th World Science Fiction Convention in San Jose, California, Layton was selected as the winning bid for the 2019 NASFiC. Layton's bid was certified as the winner with 171 votes out of 192 cast. There were no other official bids.[3][4]

At SpikeCon, Columbus, Ohio won the bid for the 14th North American Science Fiction Convention in 2020, running essentially unopposed. The event also saw Tonopah, Nevada chosen as the location of Westercon 74, to be held in 2021.

Committee[edit]

The bid was sponsored by the Utah Fandom Organization.[5] Kate Hatcher was the chair of the convention committee.

Events[edit]

The convention hosted film screenings, pub crawls, a masquerade, an art auction, a concert by Tom Smith, and a Fourth of July Star Trek breakfast.[5]
