Spiro Dimitrović Kotoranin

Spiro Dimitrović Kotoranin or Špiro Dmitrović Kotoranin (Benkovac, 13 January 1813 - Zagreb, 6 February 1868) was both a Serbian and Croatian writer, lyrical poet and translator of foreign plays for the Theatre in Zagreb. He was a friend of Petar Preradović.

He served as an Austrian officer in Venice (1841–1845). Participated in the founding of a secret society, the goal of which was "the realization of the Slavic Empire." According to the Venice police, he was the "soul" of the Society.[1]When the conspiracy was discovered, he was called to account and was forced to retire in the rank of captain. He lived in Benkovac for a while, and then went to Zagreb, where he translated Russian, German and English classics for the theatre.

While still alive, while his enthusiasm, revolutionary enthusiasm and national romanticism, he delighted future champions of the People's Party of Dalmatia. The writer Petar Preradović dedicated to Špiro Dimitrović Kotoranin his "Famous verses: Epistle to Špiro Dimitrović".

He is best known for translating plays by Friedrich Schiller's "Marija Stjuartska" ( Mary Stuart), Razbojnici (The Robbers), Viliam Tel (William Tell),[2]Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin (1860), Poltava by Alexander Pushkin (1860)[3] and Julius Caesar by Shakespeare (1860).[4][5]The plays were performed in Zagreb where Kotoranin lived and worked. Today he is shared as a literary figure by Croatia and Serbia alike.
