Spotify Discover Weekly is a personalized weekly playlist created by Spotify to help users find new music they might like. It uses an algorithm based on your listening history, the music you've liked and disliked, and the listening habits of similar users to create a unique selection of songs that are updated each Monday. Every Monday, Spotify Discover Weekly provides users with 30 new tracks to explore and enjoy. It's a great way to discover new artists and genres and to broaden your musical horizons.
Purpose[edit]
Every week, customers will receive a two-hour mix of music that has been specifically curated for them based on their musical preferences.
Every Monday morning, the user will have access to a playlist that is based on the songs they listen to and songs that are relevant to them. The tool gives users another way to enjoy their favorite music while learning about new musical artists and their craft.
History:[edit]
On July 20th, July 2015 (the third Monday of that m,onth) popular music streaming service Spotify launched the Spotify Discover Weekly feature, which at the time was not common among music lovers.[1].Spotify was closing in on 100 million monthly active users, each when this feature was launched.
Finding the ideal balance between playlist length and variety took Spotify some time. The Discover Weekly playlist had 100 songs in its initial test versions, but listening to that much music may be boring[2].
The playlists appeared scary when they contained only artists that a user had never streamed.
Other developments[edit]
In January 2019, The Vox reported that Spotify is making big changes and is now offering brands the option to sponsor Discover Weekly[3].
User growth[edit]
1.7 billion streams of music from Discover Weekly playlists were recorded in December 2015, according to Quartz[4].
The Features on the other helps independent musicians to gain more streams and exposure to their music as it suggest their tracks to new audience in the platform[5].
Criticism[edit]
In recent years, Spotify has faced criticism that its "Discover Weekly" update contained the same tracks as the previous week (recommendations weren't refreshing), according to a 2022 article in Piunikaweb[6]. Spotify acknowledged these difficulties on their community website and promised to fix them.
