Oludipe Oluwasanmi David (born October 1, 1997) professionally known as Spyro is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He gained widespread recognition after the release of his single "Billing" featuring Davido. Later in 2022, Spyro also released the song "Who is Your Guy," which was on Apple's Top 10 music chart in 5 African countries. He later released a remix in 2023 featuring Tiwa Savage. Spyro also has music collaborations with Mayorkun, Dremo, Peruzzi, Popcaan and many others[1][2][3]
Background, education and career
Spyro was born on October 1st, 1997 in Lagos and hails from Lagos State. He did his primary education in New Mainland Children School, then proceeded to Model College in Meiran where he completed his secondary school education. He graduated from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State.
He started his musical career at a very tender age, beginning by singing in a church choir. He started professionally in 2017 and grew up choosing Usher and R Kelly as his mentors, which influenced his music style. He started as an independent artist and remains an independent artist.[4]
Spyro revealed that during his struggling days, he used to seek financial assistance from his friends just to feed himself [5]
Spyro rose to stardom after the release of his song "Billing" featuring Davido in 2022, which was listed on Apple Music's Top 100. He later released "Who is Your Guy" in August 2022, which became his biggest song. The song topped the list of most shazamed songs and Apple's Top 10 music chart in five African countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. The song was also the most used song on TikTok.[6] In 2023, the Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu picked "Who is Your Guy" as his favorite song following his re-election for a second term in office.[7] Following the success of the song, he released a remix featuring Tiwa Savage on March 3rd, 2023.[8] Spyro later released visuals of the song, which has garnered about 7 million views on YouTube [9]
