Early Years[edit]

Srinivasan Ramani has completed his schooling in Chennai, India. Followed by an undergraduate degree (BSc) in physics at Vivekananda College, University of Madras.[5] He joined the Government College of Technology (GCT), Coimbatore to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering and went on for post-graduate studies at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, was admitted to the M.Tech program in Electronics.[5] Ramani also embarked on his PhD program at IIT Mumbai and grew his interest in pursuing a post-doctoral degree at Carnegie-Mellon University after completing his PhD work.[2][6][7]

Srinivasan Ramani's innovative work in computer networking, computer software, and computer education has significantly assisted India's information technology industry.[8][9] Throughout his career, Ramani has acted as a mentor to a number of PhDs in computer science and information technology, many of whom have gone on to have prominent positions in academia, government, and business.[5]

Srinivasan Ramani is the first Indian to be enshrined in The Internet Hall of Fame in 2014, who helped establish internet access in India in the early 1980s.[3] Srinivasan Ramani, one of the eight project coordinators, played a crucial role in bringing the internet to India. In 1983, he had proposed the creation of an Indian academic network.[10] His vision and leadership as the National Centre for Software Technology's founding director (later renamed C-DAC) helped to establish the nationwide Education and Research Network (ERNET), a platform designed to serve the requirements of the nation's research and educational communities.[2][11][12]
