Sriram “Sri” Kosuri is an American scientist, entrepreneur, and academic known for work in synthetic biology, functional genomics, and bioinformatics. He is a co-founder and CEO of Octant and an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).[1][2]

Early life and education

Kosuri was born in North Carolina in 1979 (age 46) and raised in New Jersey, with time in Philadelphia and Kansas. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley and a ScD (Doctor of Science) in Biological Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).[1]

Career

Kosuri’s career spans academic research and commercial biotechnology. Early in his career, he worked at the Wyss Institute and at Harvard University, where he contributed to technologies in gene synthesis, DNA information storage, gene editing, and large-scale multiplexed assays.[1]

He was involved with the founding teams or advisory boards of multiple companies in the synthetic biology and biotech sectors, including serving as a co-founder and CEO of Octant. Kosuri has been described as having helped build technologies, labs, and companies over two decades focused on creating large-scale experimental approaches to protein biochemistry, human genetic variation, gene regulation, chemical biology, synthetic biology, and functional genomics.[1]

Teaching and mentorship

Kosuri is an associate professor (previously assistant professor) in the UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, where his laboratory conducts empirical, high-throughput investigations into protein function and genetic variation.[3]

Awards and honors

Kosuri has received several major early-career awards, including the NIH New Innovator Award (2014) and the Searle Scholar Award (2015). He was one of 15 Searle Scholars selected in 2015 and was the only UCLA scientist to receive the award that year.[1][7]
