History[edit]

St John PNG was originally setup by the New South Wales Branch of St John in 1957. When PNG became an independent state within the Commonwealth, the Parliament established St John as a statutory body through the St John Council Incorporation Act 1976.

St John Ambulance has operated in Papua New Guinea since 1957. In that year, St John first aid courses commenced.

In 1983 St John Ambulance took over the responsibility for providing the National Government’s ambulance services in the Southern region.[3]

St John in PNG is a part of the St John International which exists primarily to promote knowledge and skills in emergency care[4]. From the ancient Order’s Knights of St John, the Order maintained a tradition of charitable support for the ill and injured and in its modern form developed an interest in first aid through Britain’s industrial revolution.[5]

COVID-19 Response and Advocacy[edit]

St John played an important part in Papua New Guinea's response to the COVID-19 emergency situation. St John worked with the Government's COVID-19 Pandemic National Control Centre to establish a large field hospital, provide drive-thru testing services in Port Moresby. St John also played an important role in COVID-19 advocacy and featured in international press to identify the growing need or system challenges. [1] [2][3]. In April 2021, Johanniter International Assistance, St John's Europe sister organisation, deployed to support St John in operating a field hospital in Port Moresby's Taurama Aquatic Indoor Centre [4]
