Plot
The basis of the rock opera is the events that occurred in Chile in 1973, when a military coup removed the left government "Popular Unity" from power. The military junta, which staged the coup led by General Augusto Pinochet, immediately repressed thousands of supporters of the ousted government. A stadium in Santiago was converted into a prison, where suspicious people were sent. One of the prisoners was the singer Victor Jara, who was arrested at the University of Santiago on September 12, 1973, for contributing to the implementation of communist ideas. He was brutally murdered. Within four days, he was beaten, tortured with electric shocks, his hands were broken, and he was eventually shot.
The name Victor Jara is not mentioned in the rock opera. The country in which these events occur is also not named in the opera, but the outline of the plot quite clearly points to the real facts.
