Stavros Mavroudeas

Stavros D. Mavroudeas (born 1961) is a Greek economist working in the tradition of political economy. He is Professor of Political Economy at the Department of Social Policy of Panteion University and was previously Professor of Political Economy at the Department of Economics of the University of Macedonia. Mavroudeas' work in political economy has focused on Marxist political economy, development economics, labour economics, history of economic thought and Greek economic history. He has written on economic crises, Greek macroeconomic policy, growth theory, economics of the European integration, postmodernist economics, regulation approach and radical institutionalist theories.

Biography[edit]

Mavroudeas was born in Athens, in 1961 and graduated from Varvakeios Model School in 1979. He received a BA in Economics in 1984 from the University of Athens, followed by an MSc in Economics in 1986 from the School of Oriental and African Studies. He completed his PhD in Economics in 1990 at Birkbeck College. The title of his PhD was Regulation Approach: A Critical Appraisal and was supervised by Ben Fine.

In 1993, Mavroudeas joined the Economics Department of the University of Macedonia as a lecturer, eventually becoming a professor. In January 2020 he was appointed Professor of Political Economy at the Department of Social Policy of Panteion University. In the course of his career, Mavroudeas has taught political economy, economic analysis and development economics. His major political influences stem from the left in Greece and from progressive movements abroad. He has been a student union activist, an academic trade unionist and a left political activist. His major theoretical influences come from Marxism.

In 2018 Mavroudeas was awarded the World Association of Political Economy prize for ‘Distinguished Achievement Award on World Political Economy of the Twenty-first Century’ for his book ‘Greek Capitalism in Crisis: Marxist Analyses’ (Routledge).
