Steak and Blowjob Day (sometimes Steak and Knobber Day[1]), shortly Steak & BJ Day, is an unofficial observance created in the United States as a male response for Valentine's Day and celebrated a month later, on March 14.[2] It has been described as an internet meme, with little or no observance in reality.[3] On the day, women are purportedly supposed to cook a steak for, and perform fellatio on, a man in response to postcards and flowers given by men on Valentine's Day.[4] The observance has no official status, being rather a popular Internet meme than an actual holiday, but various souvenirs and video clips have been produced about it.[1][3] It has caused some controversy, being described as antifeminist or partiarchial.[5] Men's magazine Maxim described it as "the greatest holiday of all time",[6] whereas Cosmopolitan was unsure whether it was a "pathetically outdated and gross, sexist event" or "just an bawdy celebration of good sex and good food".[7] The Sabotage Times suggested the whole day seemed "a bit Neanderthal [in trying to] force through a day devoted to this coupling", and suggested a range of alternatives.[8]

One of the various websites competing to be the 'official' page of the day stated "March 14th henceforth became 'Steak and Blowjob Day.' Simple, effective and self explanatory. No cards, no flowers, no special nights on the town; the name explains it all: just a steak and a BJ. That’s it."[9] The "official" websites provide guides on how best to cook steak, and how to best perform fellatio.[10] The holiday has drawn attention from celebrities including Christina Aguilera, who encouraged her fans to celebrate it in 2014,[11] and Peter Andre.[12]

In 2016, Instinct noted that the day is also now being used as a way to successfully raise money for breast cancer research.[13] In Germany, Bild noted the day is known as Schnitzel und Blowjob Tag,[14] and in France, female-targeted magazine Madmoizelle.com [fr] called it Journeé Steak et Pipe and noted it was a day targeted at men,[15] while Le Bonbon [fr] said it was a "most American holiday".[16]

Cultural analysis[edit]

According to Lois Banner, a professor of University of Southern California and a feminist historian, Steak and Blowjob Day is a "part of the backlash against the feminist movement" and a "very gross version of human interaction" inherent to hookup culture. It is allegedly based on the idea that men should dominate women, as they "are really frightened because women are outperforming them" in some areas.[4] It is also suggested that it limits women's freedom of choice, thus being in the mainstream of traditional patriarchal restriction of female sexual behavious, as is reported by activist Feminista Jones.[3] Writer and psychologist Walker Thornton noted that the day, although silly, emphasized for her the issues she had with the modern worldview of Valentine's Day.[17]

Tango Magazine considered that although there were accusations that the holiday "reeked of male privilege", and was a "silly calendar filler", the day (like Valentine's Day) was an "opportunity to show your lover a freaky, fun, sexy and romantic time".[18] The Huffington Post claimed (with deliberate irony) that the day "made them want to gag"[19], and both FHM and the Daily Mirror noted that businesses were cashing in on the unofficial holiday.[20][21]

History[edit]

Several websites[22] claim to be the official site of Steak and Blowjob day, but none of them identify as the creator. They agree that the holiday was devised by radio DJ Tom Birdsey in 2002, during a show on WFNX radio station in Boston, Massachusetts.[1]

The day of celebration is sometimes suggested to be March 20 instead of March 14, either because the latter was proclaimed to be Steak and Knobber Day by another radio host Dave Rickards in 1998, or because the former coincides with Pi Day, observing the mathematical constant π (pi).[1][23]

British tabloid newspaper Metro suggested that a female equivalent of the day, entitled "Chicken and Licking" day, takes place soon after Steak and Blowjob Day each year.[24]
