Stephen Garrett (born May 29, 1968) is an Australian contemporary artist who works in photography, sculpture and collage. He has held solo exhibitions in Australia as well as North America, Europe and Asia, and has been curated into international group exhibitions.

Early work[edit]

While still at art school, Garrett was curated into the Sydney Festival (2000) curated by Ron Robinson-Swann.[1]

Garrett completed his Fine Art degree at University of Newcastle (2001). This was followed by his first solo exhibition at Access Contemporary Art Gallery, Sydney (2000).[2] In 2001 Garrett was awarded The Marten Bequest[3] for sculpture, allowing him to live and travel in Tibet, China and Vietnam for 2 years where he had his first International solo exhibition at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Hanoi Vietnam, titled, điều này điều đó đây đó (this that here there) (2001).[4] Garrett relocated to Melbourne on his return from Asia and completed his Ph.D in the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture[5] at Monash University (2009). In the same year as completing his Doctorate, Garrett had his first solo exhibition in France Gold Rush, collaborating with French artist Marie-Jeanne Hoffner at Espace d'art contemporain de la Ville de la Rochelle, La Rochelle.[6]. Garrett and Hoffner created a follow up exhibition, After the Gold Rush for the Melbourne International Art Festival 2009.[7][8]
