Steven Carl Cash (November 14, 1979 – April 16, 2020), also known online as SteveCash83, was an American musician and YouTuber best known for his Talking Kitty Cat YouTube series. He was the guitarist and vocalist for the ska band Pause for the Cause.

Career[edit]

Cash created his channel on November 30, 2007, after seeing The Mean Kitty Song and wanting to make a response video, which was uploaded on December 5, 2007, and titled "The Mean(er) Kitty Song".[2] He originally intended for this to be the only cat video on his channel, but he later went on to upload the first episode of the Talking Kitty Cat series on March 3, 2008, titled "Talking Kitty Cat 1 -Wake up kitty!". The video depicted him trying to wake up his “talking” cat, Sylvester.[3] Cash's channel grew during those years, gaining him up to 2.4 million subscribers as of 2019.

Cash's most popular video was “Talking Kitty Cat 44 - BAD! BAD! BAD!”, where he introduced his new kitten to his cats.[4] The video ranked up to 17 million views.

Cash's final video, "Talking Kitty Cat 69 - Sylvester Goes To Court", was released on December 30, 2019.[5] He revealed on his Facebook on March 11, 2020, that he was in the process of producing another Talking Kitty Cat video, but it has not been released due to his death.

Besides Cash’s YouTube career, he was also a musician and was part of the ska band Pause for the Cause.

Personal life[edit]

Cash married Celia Cash (née DeCosta), his long-term girlfriend. He had five stepchildren, two biological children, and seven grandchildren.[6] Cash's mother died in 2016 and he announced it on her Facebook account.

Death and aftermath[edit]

In November 2019, Cash announced on Facebook that he was suffering from bipolar depression. He later said in his final video that he apologized for taking long on his videos and opened up about his depression.[7]

On April 16, 2020, Cash's wife, Celia Cash, revealed on Facebook that he had committed suicide, although the cause was unknown at the time.[8] It was later announced that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.[1][9][10] He was 40 years old.[9] His older sister, Candida Cash-Morgan, paid her tribute to him on the page, saying, "Rest in peace, my baby brother."

On the same day, Cash's sister, Kayce Haynes, created a tribute video, then later created a GoFundMe page to aid with funeral costs, linking the fundraiser in a comment. Within the first five days of being live, the fundraiser campaign gained over $35,000, with many fans leaving messages of support.[11]

Cash's funeral was held on April 24, 2020, and his viewing was held on the previous day.[6] It was revealed on his Facebook page by an admin that his cats remained with his wife, Celia. His dog, Shelby, was rehoused to Cash's fellow band member, Darcy.

On December 15, 2020, it was announced that Sylvester, Cash’s cat and star of his Talking Kitty Cat series, died of unknown causes on December 10, 2020.
