Steve Wooten was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips in the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers during the 80s and 90s. He was a defender, playing for Melchester Rovers, and England. He first appeared in the strip in 1986.
He was also known as Steve Nobby Wooten.
The character is a fondly remembered childhood memory for several generations of British men.[1]
Career
Club
Steve played for the Melchester Rovers youth team and got his chance of progressing to the first team after the Basran tragedy. Roy saw Steve as the ideal replacement for right back Noel Baxter who lost his life in the disaster. He made his debut for the Rovers against Deans Park on 23rd August 1986, in a 5-0 win. He was Rovers' last Club Captain, being the only remaining player from Roy Race 's playing days.
In his earlier days he was given the nickname "Nobby", but that has now been dropped. He was regarded as something of a fitness fanatic which is perhaps one reason who he is still going strong. The Roy of the Rovers 2000 Annual cited him as being aged 33. He has modified his game from marauding full back to astute centre-back. He was dropped in the 1998/1999 season and he proved his competitive spirit by regaining his place and captaincy.[2]
He helped the Rovers to the Littlewoods Cup in 1987, the League Championship in 1988, the FA Cup in 1990, the League Championship again in 1992, the Division One play off final in 1998, the FA Cup in 1999 and the Premier League Championship for the 1999/2000 season.

International
Wooten had 21 England Under caps as stated in 1986. His ambition was to earn a full cap for England.
Style of play
He played as right back and centre back.
Legacy
A one club man, Nobby tayed loyal to the Rovers when nobody else did. Eventually made captain when Roy returned in 97/98. Scored the winner in the 99 Cup Final. He is remembered as Rovers' last ever captain.
