Steven Andrew Culpepper

Steven Andrew Culpepper is an American statistician whose research focuses on Latent class models and Bayesian statistics. He is a Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and an affiliated Professor with Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology as well as the departments of Psychology and Educational Psychology. Education and career[edit]
Culpepper studied economics at Bowling Green State University in Toledo, Ohio, earning a bachelor's degree there. He then went to University of Minnesota, Twin Cities for his graduate studies in Educational Psychology where he completed his Ph.D. in 2006[1] under the joint supervision of Ernest C. Davenport, Jr.[1][2]
After completing his Ph.D., he was an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Denver in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. He moved to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2011.[1] He was named as a Data Science Founder Professorial Scholar,[3] and was given a Distinguished Promotion Award in 2021.[4]
He is a co-editor of the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics from 2022 to present [5][6] and was the main editor from 2020 to 2022 [7]. He was elected to be the president of the Psychometric Society for 2025 to 2026. [8]
He created and mentors students through the Blackwell Summer Scholars program in honor of David Blackwell, who was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign [9].

He was recognized alongside James Balamuta with the 2021 Bradley Hanson Award for Contributions to Educational Measurement. [10]
