Founded in the year 1996 by Orlando René Ramírez Ozuna in Stockholm, Sweden, Stockholm Precision Tools (SPT AB) is a designer and manufacturer of downhole gyro survey instruments that are used in directional drilling, gyro surveying, wellbore surveying, and borehole surveying. With its headquarters in Sweden, SPT also has offices in Spain, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, USA, Peru and in major mining locations globally.
History
In 1998, Stockholm Precision Tools made its debut in the Oil and Gas industry, where in Tunisia, the use of a True North-Seeking gyro was unprecedented. As a result of the successful operation in Tunisia, Stockholm Precision Tools received industry-wide acclaim for their technology and innovation. By the year 2000, SPT became the first and only gyro surveying company to introduce gyro survey tools in the mining industry. In 2004, SPT introduced a memory mode feature to their existing line of true north seeking gyros, which was employed in a key mining operation in Australia, and later utilized in Kalgoorlie WA.
In 2010, SPT received worldwide attention for their instrumental role in the rescue of 33 Chilean Miners who were trapped in the San Jose mine, Chile. Obtaining the real azimuth (bore hole direction) was the main obstacle in the rescue mission due to the extreme circumstances surrounding the location of the trapped miners. Hence, a survey operation tool with pin-point accuracy was indispensable. SPT's North-seeking gyro technology successfully facilitated the rescue mission.
SPT further expanded their range of directional instruments by incorporating continuous mode to their assembly of gyro tools and also developed the first lightweight device for aligning drilling rigs without the use of conventional aligning methods, such as compass, or a GPS. In 2013, they incorporated fiber optic technology in all of their surveying instruments. In 2014, SPT executed its first-ever river crossing project with the GWD (Gyro While Drilling) technique. It was the main driver in the project of recovering a sunken Amuriya ship which was was sunk during the First Gulf War under Operation Desert Storm on January 23rd, 1991.
2016 marked an important year for SPT as this was the year when they celebrated 20 years of being a leading manufacturer and provider of accurate and precise true north seeking gyroscopes that use MEMS Technology. The same year, SPT launched its first solid-state gyro tool which featured core retrieval technology. This solution was first used at INSERSA, Spain. Along with the Core Retrieval solution, SPT also released the PathBreaker Whipstock technology for Oil and Gas Industry.
In 2019 SPT was recognized as the most profitable Swedish company in the mining industry by various national financial publications.

Borehole Survey
During drilling, the main objective for miners and the geologists is to obtain precise information about the borehole they are surveying. During the process of drilling a borehole, the operator needs to geosteer and adjust the borehole position (inclination and azimuth angles) on the fly to reach one or more geological targets. While doing so, the down-hole survey tools obtain precise location data of the borehole path, along with several data points that are required in order to create a 3-D representation of the borehole.
Whipstock Orientation
Whipstocks are tools that are used to create sidetracks in wells while drilling. The main objectives of performing a sidetrack in both cased and open wellbores are to drill new boreholes in the attempt to find more productive areas or increasing wellbore zone reach by drilling lateral wells or to bypass obstructions in existing wellbores.
Retrieving Core Samples
Most core samples are obtained by drilling with special drills into the substance, such as sediment or rock with a hollow steel tube, called a Core Drill. In the coring process, the sample/core is pushed more or less intact into the tube and is retrieved using a Core Retriever tool. This allows the user to complete a survey and pull the core simultaneously, saving a significant amount of time, thus increasing productivity.
Rig Alignment Technology
Traditionally, drilling rigs are aligned using a gyro-compass, GPS, or other positioning tools. However, SPT provides an all-in-one, lightweight rig alignment solution in which it aligns the rig to the true-north in less than 5 minutes. It is designed to be driller deployable, thus reducing the need of on-site surveyors and align drills/collars.
