Sue Cheung
Sue Cheung (Chinese name: Cheung Ying Yee), formerly known as Sue Pickford, is a novelist. She is best known for her first novel Chinglish.
Biography
Born in Nottingham, Cheung was a descent of Hong Kong Chinese parent who ran a Chinese restaurant. Her parents then started operating a butchers shop when she was nine in Hull. Her family moved to Coventry to live in a Chinese take-away for most of her teen years.
At the age of 16, she won a scholarship at the London College of Fashion to become an artist. She then worked in advertising industry and became an Art Director, before switching her career as a freelance designer.
Her first novel for teenagers, Chinglish, has won several prizes, including the 2019 Guardian’s Best Books list, ‘Simply the Book’ category at the Coventry Inspiration Book Awards, and the Young Adult category the Diverse Book Awards.
