Howard Charles Liebengood (March 28, 1969 – January 9, 2021) was an officer of the United States Capitol Police. Prior to entering law enforcement, Liebengood had a career in professional auto racing.
Early life[edit]
Liebengood was born in Manhattan, Kansas, to Howard Liebengood and his wife Dee.[1] In the 1980s, Liebengood attended James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia, where he was on the wrestling team.[2]
In May 1991, Liebengood graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in history.[3]
Racing career[edit]
Liebengood spent several years as a professional racecar driver. He placed third in the 1997 Toyota Atlantic Championship (C2-Class). Liebengood.[4][2][5] Liebengood was sponsored by Pennzoil and the National Campaign to Stop Violence, an anti-bullying organization.[5][6]
Capitol Police[edit]
In April 2005, Liebengood joined the Capitol Police. His father had previously served as Sergeant at Arms of the United States Senate.[2][3] Liebengood was on duty during the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol.[3] On January 9, 2021, Liebengood died by suicide, while off-duty.[3][7][8][9] On March 17, Liebengood's widow called for a 9/11-style commission into the attack.[10]
