Sujit Kumar Meher(Odia: ସୁଜିତ୍ ମେହେର) (born 10 February 1989) is an Indian fashion designer, author and entrepreneur from Odisha, India. Sujit actively revives and promotes Odisha's Habaspuri Handloom, Habaspuri sari and Sambalpuri handloom globally under his label 'Tilottama' (named after his grandmother). He showcases his creative designs with Indian traditional handloom arts for social causes.[1][2][3]

Education

He graduated in 2013 from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore, studying Fashion and lifestyle design, having dropped out from an engineering college previously. At the age of 22, he started his own fashion label called Tilottama and wants to bring back the culture of Indian handlooms by infusing it with modern fashion trends[4].

Career

Born and brought up in Odisha, Meher was studying to graduate in Engineering when he decided to change his career path and applied for the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Bangalore. In 2012 he helped organize the annual Odisha festival, Nuakhai, incorporating the first ever Sambalpuri handloom fashion show. In September 2013 he presented his first design collection with Sambalpuri handloom fabric with the theme of "Folk Fashion" in Bangalore. [5][6][7]

His designs blend ikat designed fabric with cotton and silk and are known as Sambalpuri fusion. [8] Meher has been involved in the promotion of Odisha Handloom products under the direction of the Odisha State and central government. He founded brand "Tilottama" to promote Indian handloom globally and started retail outlets under his brand label.[9] Sujit has showcased his design collections with Indian handlooms in Bhubaneswar, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai and many places.[10][11][12]Sujit has taken the initiative to revive and promote his homeland handloom called Habaspuri Handloom of Kalahandi after seeing its dying condition. [13][14].[15]

Despite coming from the most backward region of the country, Sujit developed an interest in studying fashion and got selected to the prestigious NIFT in Bangalore. After successfully completing the course, he started working with the prestigious Bollywood film production house EROS International based in Mumbai. He often associates with NGOs to support various causes and spread awareness of Indian traditional handlooms, designs and other Indian arts. He is also an orator, motivational speaker, writer and a storyteller, who penned a bestselling novel in 2015, titled "Dreams beyond Grades" that talks about his own journey from rags to riches.[16][17][18] Sujit has been awarded and honored with many prestigious awards nationally and internationally. [19][20] He has been a judge for IIT Kanpur annual fest Antaragni[21][22][23]. In late 2022 Sujit designed habaspuri handloom uniforms for students of Kalahandi University to revive and popularize habaspuri handloom in association with the university.[24][25]
