Early life and family

He was the second of eight children of Abdul Wahhab and Khairunnesa. His father was the assistant headteacher of Rasamay High School in Sylhet town.

Education

Hossain's primary education began at the Talibpur Primary School in Bishwanath. After completing his studies there, his father was assassinated by miscreants. His studies were halted for a while. After that, he enrolled at the Baramchal High School near his maternal home in Kulaura. In 1966, he passed his exams in first division. He then proceeded to study at the Murari Chand College in Sylhet town where he completed his higher studies in 1968, allowing him to begin his bachelor's degree at the nearby Madan Mohan College.
