Dr. Sumi Gupta (Hindi: सुमी गुप्ता) (born 16 January 1971 in Delhi, India), is a passionate Social Sector and CSR Advisor and a practicing CSR Policy Professional besides being a highly-skilled Communications expert. She is the Founder and Director of Tatsat Foundation™, ContentCraft™, and the Editor-in-Chief of Tatsat Chronicle. She is also involved with social-sector bureaucracy and policy decision-making.

Biography

Born on 16 January 1971 in Delhi, India, Dr Sumi Gupta is the Founder and Director of Tatsat Foundation[1], a Section 25 company, Organizing the Unorganized Social Sector through Education, to ‘professionalize the social sector’, advocating for the dignity and respect of those working in the sector.

She is the Director of ContentCraft™ [2] a Branding, Communications and CSR consultancy and Editor-in-Chief of Tatsat Chronicle [3], India’s first social sector-focused magazine.

Dr. Sumi Gupta has over 20 years of experience in various countries like the UK, Philippines, Costa Rica, India, US, and Europe, across varied industries - IT / ITES, Global Retail, Social Sector, Luxury, and Consumer Products, Healthcare and Financial Services. Dr. Gupta is a seasoned professional known for her expertise in Corporate Social Responsibility Advisory (CSR Advisory), Corporate Communications, Corporate Affairs, Crisis Management, and Image, Brand, and Reputation Management.

Education

Dr. Gupta went to the Convent of Jesus & Mary, New Delhi, India. She graduated in Commerce from the University of Delhi and went on to get her Management Degree from Symbiosis University, Pune. After securing her LLB degree from the University of Lucknow, Dr. Sumi post-graduated in M.Sc from the University of Reading, UK with International Banking & Financial Services as the major subjects. She is an alumnus of Harvard Executive Leadership Programme. Recently, Dr. Sumi was conferred with the degree of Honorary Doctor of Philosophy, for her exceptional commitment, dedication, and excellent achievement in the area of Social Service, from the Royal American University.

Career/ Professional Experience/ Professional Milestones

In 2021 Dr. Gupta launched Tatsat Chronicle, India’s first 360 degree, social sector focused magazine.[4] [5]

In 2018 founded ContentCraft, a Branding, Communications, and CSR consultancy, and Tatsat Foundation, the only non-government organization in India that is committed to transforming the social sector through education.

2015, she headed the Communications & CSR at Essar (North) and was in charge of corporate communication, public relations and CSR for the organization(North region).

From 2009 Dr. Gupta served as the Global Head -Public Relations  & CSR at WNS Global Services where she managed corporate communications, Public relations, and CSR  for the company globally and its clientele across continents such as the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

In 2006, she joined Reliance Industries Ltd and she served in the Chairman's Office. Also, Dr. Gupta was heading the Reliance Retail communications team. Where she was responsible for brand building, PR, and media communications for the company across India.

In 2002, she joined The John David Group, Reading, UK as the Retail Manager.

In 1997, Sumi Gupta joined SmithKline Beecham, India as a consultant and went on to Join Mascon Global Limited (MGL) in 1999 as EA to the Chairman.

In 1995, Dr. Gupta began her career as a Relationship Manager at Escorts Finance Ltd.(EFL).

Entrepreneur

Dr. Sumi Gupta founded Tatsat Foundation (2018), India’s first non-government organisation that is extensively engaged in developing a conceptual framework and formal education system for the social-sector and CSR-specific education and certification, both for aspiring candidates, who want to work in this sector and those who are already working in this domain.

Dr. Sumi Gupta Founder Director, ContentCraft (2018), which offers CSR Advisory Services to organisations, helps align company CSR initiatives with the overall business ecosystem by providing innovative and scalable solutions with quantifiable impact analysis. Further, Dr. Gupta promotes and advises corporates to adopt and implement the best CSR practices that are acceptable globally.

Dr. Gupta launched Tatsat Chronicle in 2021, India’s first comprehensive social sector magazine. The magazine offers a deep dive into the rapidly evolving social sector space which is widely underreported in the mainstream media. The magazine aims to bridge this gap.[6] [7]

Social Innovator

Dr. Sumi Gupta introduced the eco-friendly SeedPaper concept for Tatsat Foundation. [8]The initiative is a race against depleting climatic conditions thus providing measures to fix environmental issues through recycling. This SeedPaper is suited for printing bills, single-use packets (replacing plastic), visiting cards, gift wraps, writing pads, notebook covers, etc. The project was implemented as a part of Tatsat’s “Go Green” campaign. Apart from this, the Tatsat visiting card with marigold seeds was planted which sprouted into a beautiful plant. Dr. Gupta was given the prestigious Bharat Confluence Award, 2019 at the British Parliament [9] for introducing pioneering innovation - SeedPaper.  

Social Entrepreneur

Dr. Sumi Gupta, Director, Tatsat Foundation, partnered with Prashak - a technology company and Asia Institute of Technology to contribute to the government’s concept of Smart Village, an initiative for holistic rural development.[10] This eco-friendly Habitech-NivaraTantra Building Technology uses materials and technology that reduces its carbon footprint and lowers its energy needs. Using the same technology the fully integrated Rashtrapati Ashiana, Dehradun has been constructed for the Presidential secretariat of the President of India. [11]

Educationalist

With a view to formalize social welfare education for those aspiring to make a career in the sector , Dr. Sumi Gupta aims to create formal education system with best practices from  national and international institutions for skill development of undergraduates, graduates and post-graduates seeing a career in the social sector. The project offers a structured curriculum with domain training and certification.

Social Development Expert

As an advocate of social development Dr. Sumi Gupta, Director,  Tatsat Foundation and gFiles Magazine promote, build awareness and recognize Civil Servants at the national level in India for extraordinary achievements in governance at an annual award ceremony.[12] The awards are presented to the serving and retired civil servants besides officers working with the Railways, Postal Service, Bank & Financial Institutions, Public Sector Undertakings, Corporate Heads, Management & Academic Institutes, and Social Sector heads. The award ceremony takes place every year in Delhi. The recent award ceremony took place on 12 December at Civil Services Officers Institute (CSOI) where 13 Civil Servants were awarded. [13]

  • Neki ki Deewar

Dr. Gupta, Director, TATSAT Foundation, partnered with Next Leap Organisation for Neki ki Deewar & Blood Donation Camp Under the project,  collection boxes were placed at the premises of corporates amongst others - MRC, Xceedence, Innovaceer, and Altran and the donations which included clothes, books, electronic items, toys, etc. were distributed among people living in remote tribal areas. The drive was conducted at Gurugram, Noida, Bengaluru, and Pune. Blood donation camps were held at six different centers in association with the International Red Cross Society.[14]

  • Khajuraho

Tatsat Foundation joined hands for the renowned film festival held against the backdrop of Khajuraho Temples - a UNESCO World Heritage site - to raise awareness about the importance of social sector development and education.

  • Zindagi

The initial 21-day lockdown due to the Covid pandemic in March 2020 wreaked havoc on the lives of migrant workers. Through Project Zindagi, Dr.Gupta with the help of Reliance Fresh and Delhi police, a dry ration kit containing vegetables, grains, cooking oil, toothpaste, soap, and sanitizers were distributed to the migrant workers stranded in the Delhi region.   

  • Medha 2020

Dr. Sumi Gupta, Director Tatsat Foundation, organized  MEDHA 2020, an event for the visually impaired people honored visually challenged persons to commemorate World Disability Day. The event was held in association with the National Association for the Blind-Delhi (NAB-Delhi) and Golden Shine Cultural Welfare Trust.[15]

Speaker

Dr. Gupta, a speaker at the ‘Pakhi Mahotsav 2019- The Festival of Hope’, an endeavor to celebrate the contribution of pioneers of Hindi literature and its ambassadors, besides promoting young talent to take the legacy forward. It was one of the biggest literature cultural extravaganzas.

Dr. Gupta was a speaker at Keshav Mahavidyalaya Delhi, where she spoke on sustainable programmes and livelihood means for the underprivileged through skill development.[16]

At the Indian Embassy in London in 2019, Dr. Gupta was a panellist at the inaugural session of Bharat Conclave 2019 - celebrating 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi and Khadi. She spoke about "New Age Innovation, Research, Education, Training & Skill Development programs, and about strengthening India-UK ties through collaborations in the social sector”.[17]

At the 5th Global CSR Summit in 2016, Dr. Gupta was a panellist at the discussion on “The Journey in the Last Two Years – Compliance, Implementation, Experiences, and Challenges of PSUs, Industries, and Development Sector Organizations”.

Dr. Gupta was the speaker at the Earth Day Dialogues held at the Constitution Club of India. She spoke on climate change at the Dialogue titled ‘The Earth, our Planet, its ecological disturbances, and disbalances’.

Awards and Honours

Dr. Sumi Gupta was honoured on the 14th edition of International Women’s Day by Public Diplomacy Forum (PDF),[18] to celebrate women’s indomitable spirit and honour their achievement in diverse fields.  The event at Hotel Claridges was attended by Delhi’s eminent personalities, UN delegates, diplomats, corporate heads, and celebrities. Covid warriors too were honoured on the occasion. [19]

In 2021, Dr. Sumi Gupta was awarded Honorary Doctorate – “Doctor of Philosophy” in the field of Social Service from the Royal American University.[20]

In 2019, She won Bharat Confluence Excellence Award. The same year she received Talash Awar and National Excellence Award for her outstanding contribution in the socio-economic development of the country.[21] [22]

In 2018, She won Women Excellence Award 2018 at YMCA, New Delhi.[23]

Dr. Gupta has to her credit an in-depth piece on how India is now focusing on its cottage industry and how the complete lockdown has had insurmountable repercussions on industries big or small.
