Sunil Kalai (Bengali: সুনীল কালাই; born 9 April 1984) is an Indian filmmaker, journalist, photographer and scholar of Journalism and Mass Communication.[1] He is the Head of the Department of at Agartala's Tripura University's department of Journalism and Mass Communication.[2][3][4]

Biography[edit]

Born in Tripura, India, Kalai started out from Montfort Higher Secondary School. Later, he pursued an M.Sc. in Visual Communication from Loyola College, Chennai.

Career[edit]

Kalai is a journalist in EastMojo.[5] He directed his debut film Kwtham Kothoma in 2018.[6][7] Kwtham Kothoma is a film that represents the three indigenous folk stories of Tripura, namely Chethuwang, Nuai, and Kuchuk Kherengbar, that are integral to folk culture and tradition of every home in the state.[8][9] In addition, he works as a Kokborok filmmaker and an Assistant Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tripura University.[4] His topic of study is 'the development of culture through Kokborok cinema'.[10] He is also a life member of Asia Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC). He did his PhD from Jamia Milia Islamia.

Controversy[edit]

  • The script should be in Roman since we have requested that Kokborok be developed. Let Kokborok be used for reading and writing by people around the world.[18]
  • A tribal organization urged that the airport be renamed after the final tribal monarch of the state instead of Rabindranath Tagore in response to a resolution opposing the renaming that was passed by the Tripura Assembly today. Even before the rest of the world was aware of Tagore, the King of Tripura had praised him for his genius and assisted the Nobel laureate in numerous ways.[19][20][21][22]
