Early Life

Supratiek Shyamal Ghosh, better known by the acronym SG, was born in Kolkata in a family with a deep-rooted artistic legacy. He is the son of the radio personality and acclaimed filmmaker Shyamal Ghosh and Shelly Ghosh. He is the grandson of the legendary singer Geeta Dutt.

Supratiek listened to the songs of Kishore Kumar since his childhood, and he was immensely inspired by other singers such as R.D. Burman, Michael Jackson, and Boney M. The death of his father and Kishore Kumar in 1987 strengthened his will to become a musician.

He attended Julien Day School in Kolkata and completed his post-graduation degree in commerce from Prafulla Chandra College affiliated with University of Calcutta. On one hand, Supratiek wanted to be a musician, but his father was not in support, but on the other hand, he wanted to be established as a self-sustainable ecosystem to sustain the musicians, so they did not need to totally rely on the industry.

Personal Life

At a very young age, Supratiek showed his immense affinity towards music. At the age of 4, Supratiek took part in Sai Bhajan gatherings. He also performed at the local events, gaining appreciation from the gatherings. These are a few of the early exposures SG (Supratiek Shyamal Ghosh) has received.

By the time SG reached high school, he had managed to make a prominent mark at inter-school music competitions. Having been at a school that celebrates music from the core, SG found a heaven within. At the age of 17 SG fomed his band with a few talented musicians. He also, made a prominent mark while performing with the professional organisers such as Gora Uzir and Siben Das.

Supratiek had been exposed to different music genres at an early age. He listened to the classical, bhajans, Bengali, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geet, folk and lots more. He used to attend singers such as Kishore Kumar, Md Rafi, Manna Dey and Pankaj Udhas. He liked ABBA, Michael Jackson, Boney M, Elvis Presley and The Eagles amongst international artists. During his earlier years, His mother took care of him and urged him to follow his career to become a musician. Other than this, he was backed by his sister and father, plus other famous players in the industry.

His life changed a gear when he was recognised for his versions of the songs of Kishore Kumar. His versatile talent was noticed by BM Shah, the principal seller of T-series and Subrata Roychowdhury, the Regional Manager of the T-series in Eastern India. His career path changed completely when he became known after his stinging performances of Kishore Kumar's best numbers. His talent escaped and got him to Mumbai, where he met Ajit Kholi, who was the Head of A&R at T series at that time.

Supratik’s father was never keen about making a career in music for it was too volatile and unpredictable. Rather he encouraged him to make something of his own apart from relying on sponsors. It is then he took his music career more earnestly and started taking tutelage from Ajit Kholi and Darshan Kumar which helped him to record at few of the famous studios like Golden Chariot and Sudeep studios.

Contribution of Independent Music

His contributions to the independent music movement were remarkable and defined the music in India to a great extent. As it happens to many musicians who had not yet achieved the desired level of success, SG had numerous troubles near the beginning of his career. However, instead of letting them drag him down, he used them as a source of energy to make something greater, a nation called Alive India, along with his Band Aurko leading the pack.

Another hurdle was to find a platform where he could perform his talent because there is no defined formula, and earning money from music seemed close to impossible. Subsequently, he found a vast gap regarding the getting of artists to link with brands. Labels were not supporting alliances that would have supported the musicians in making themselves visible and ensuring all the necessary funds, and so independent artists would have to survive on their own. Thereafter, he would realise that the music industry had no united network of resources that an artist would find all that they require, viz. studios, marketing, video shooting, event avenues and professional management. Very often, musicians did not know how to find trustworthy partners. Some of the artists, such as SG and Aurko, had a lot of hardship with little or no resources and guidance. These did not make SG stop; instead of living with the norms, he proceeded and transformed them. This is how Alive India was established, a platform in which musicians can develop and prosper.

Career in Media

Supratiek Shyamal Ghosh has now reached a milestone in the music industry, but he has been a passionate media personality as well.
