Surviving Economic Abuse (SEA) is a UK charity created by Nicola Sharp-Jeffs (OBE)[1] in 2017. This is the only charity in the UK solely focused on economic abuse. One in five adults[2] in the UK has experienced economic abuse in an intimate relationship.
Activities[edit]
SEA's work focuses on women who are currently or have previously experienced economic abuse in relationships. They have also partnered with Respect on a guide for men[3] who are experiencing economic abuse.
SEA has resources on their website called 'Tools to Thrive[4]' that are for survivors to help them understand their experiences and to access support. They also run a Financial Support Line[5] with Money Advice Plus, to help people experiencing financial hardship. SEA is not a frontline organisation which means they don't take on individual cases but signpost to charities that do, such as Refuge and Women's Aid.
SEA provides 'Tools to Support[6]' resourses for professionals in a range of sectors to help them support survivors. They train professionals[7] from the domestic abuse sector, government, local authorities, banks, building societies, debt advisors, mortgage providers, the police, and a range of other professionals in recognising economic abuse and supporting survivors.
Funding[edit]
In the financial year 2019-2020, SEA had a total income of £744,695[8]. Over half of this amount - £384.94k - was from donations and legacies.
