Surya Jhunjhnuwala (born 1961) is the Founder and Managing Director of Naumi Hotels, a hotel label headquartered in Singapore[1][2]. He is also the Managing Director of Hind Group, the umbrella group owned and operated by the Jhunjhnuwala family focusing on key areas such as hospitality, F&B, investments and property development[1][3]. [4]

Early life and career[edit]

Surya Jhunjhnuwala was born in Hong Kong in 1961 and attended Island School between 1975 and 1981. After finishing his A’Levels, he was immediately conscripted into the family business. Jhunjhnuwala held a pivotal role in growing the family business into one of the largest watch manufacturers in Hong Kong[5][6][1]. [7]

In 1997, Jhunjhnuwala moved to Singapore to redevelop the now defunct Oberoi Imperial Hotel, which was subsequently sold to CapitaLand in 1999.[3] Shortly after, Jhunjhnuwala bought a freehold development site along River Valley and developed it into a 46-unit boutique apartment project called Residences at 338A. He also developed a 27-unit, high-end boutique apartment project in Brisbane’s city centre called The Domain on Gregory. [7]

With a penchant for boutique hotels with distinct characters[3], Jhunjhnuwala saw the potential in building properties suited for inner-city living in the Asia Pacific region.

To date, Naumi Hotels has a growing presence in Singapore and Auckland[8][9], with two hotels set to open in Wellington in 2019[10][11] and one in Sydney in 2020. Jhunjhnuwala’s son, Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala, is leading the global expansion initiatives for the group[10].

Philanthropy[edit]

In October 2015, Jhunjhnuwala founded the Shyam Sundar Jhunjhnuwala Charity Fund in Singapore to continue the legacies of the family’s patriarch, Mr Shyam Sundar Jhunjhnuwala. He pledged $200,000 to the fund that is registered and managed by the Community Foundation of Singapore. The fund focuses on education, welfare initiatives as well as health-related issues for underprivileged women and children in Singapore.[6]

One of these initiatives include a collaboration with Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), to establish the S.S. Jhunjhnuwala – Naumi Hotel Bursary in 2016 to support financially disadvantaged and deserving female undergraduates pursuing a full-time degree programme in the Bachelor of Hospitality Business at SIT.[12]

Private life[edit]

Jhunjhnuwala's wife, Ritu Jhunjhnuwala, is the managing director of the award-winning Rang Mahal Group of Restaurants[1]. [13] They have three children – son Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala and daughters Shivika Goenka[13] and Arushi Agrawal.
