Susanna Harris is an American science communicator and mental health activist. She is the founder and CEO of PhD Balance, a website focused on mental illness in higher education.[1][2]

Harris was born in Seattle, Washington and grew up in Ankeny, Iowa.[3] She attended the University of Iowa from 2010 - 2014 and graduated with a B.S. in Microbiology.[4] Harris is now a PhD candidate in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[5] Harris is also a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow.[6]
Career[edit]
Harris is a science communicator, using Instagram and Twitter as her primary platforms.[7][8] She shares images of her research on plants and microbes, as well as thoughts on graduate school.[8]
Mental Health Activism[edit]
Harris founded The PhDepression LLC, a website about mental illness and mental health in academia, later rebranded as PhD Balance.[9] Harris has been interviewed in several media outlets about failing her PhD candidacy exam and subsequent depression, as well as mental health in academia more broadly.[1][10][11][12][13][14] She has also written about social media and mental health[15] and about neurodiversity in STEM.[16]
Harris is a member of the Council of Graduate Schools' mental health initiative advisory board,[17] as the only graduate student involved.[18]
