The Swami Vivekananda State Police Academy (SVSPA) is a police training institution in Barrackpore, West Bengal that caters to the training needs of the West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police.[1][2][3] The Academy conducts training for direct recruits at D.S.P, Sub-Inspector and Constable ranks of West Bengal Police. Pre-Promotional training is also provided for these ranks on promotion from subordinate ranks. There is also a dog training school within the Academy for training police dogs.[4][5] The Barrackpore House, which was the summer house for Viceroys and Governor-Generals of India during the British Raj, is located within the Campus.[6]

History

The history of formal Police Training in West Bengal is over a century old. The foundation for an organised Police Force in India was laid down by The Police Act, 1861[7]. During the British Raj, a police training school was established in the Bengal Presidency at Bhagalpur in 1863.[8] A second school was later set up at Mill Barracks near Dhaka in 1893. Following the Partition of Bengal in 1905, Bhagalpur became a part of the new province of Bihar and a new training school for the province of Bengal was created at Sardah in 1912, along with a smaller training center, the Barrackpore Training College, at Barrackpore. After India's Independence, a new training college was established at Barrackpore and merged with the earlier Barrackpore Training College in 1949. The college was given its present name, Swami Vivekananda State Police Academy, in August of 2011.[9] The Training Branch of West Bengal Police is under the Director General (Training) West Bengal. The DG exercises functional supervision and is the chief inspecting officer of the police training institutions of West Bengal. The DG (Training) is assisted by ADG (Training) and IGP (Training).[10]
