Mariane Carolina Rossi, better known as Sweet Carol, is a Brazilian YouTube content creator who started to gain recognition by creating ASMR videos.[2]
Biography[edit]
Sweet Carol, born in Itapira,[2] has a degree in nursing, but has never worked in the profession,[3] and flight attendant.[4] She has the Sweet Carol Mix YouTube channel, which she created separately from her main channel, so she can focus on other subjects.[5]
Career[edit]
Carol describes that she first experienced ASMR as a child in a toy store.[4] She joined YouTube in 2009,[5] and her current channel was created in 2012[6] and was initially about makeup,[2][3] fashion and behavior, having been created to go through a difficult period in her youth.[5] Upon discovering ASMR in 2015, after a question from a follower,[7] she started making related videos.[4][8]
Public reception[edit]
Due to the repercussion of her work, in 2016 and 2017 she was interviewed on TV Globo's Encontro com Fátima Bernardes;[9][10] in 2018[11] and 2020 she was interviewed at SBT's The Noite com Danilo Gentili;[1][12] and by 2021 she already had more than 2 million subscribers in her channel.[13] She was also interviewed by Rádio Gazeta,[14] Revista Capricho,[15] Diário do Nordeste,[7] was subject at RecordTV Balanço Geral[16] and Câmera Record.[17] Due to her success on YouTube, the platform became her main job[18] and according to the newspaper Público, she is considered one of the pioneers of the ASMR technique in Brazil.[19]
Her work has already been addressed in academic works: researcher Shayane Marques Zica, from the University of Brasília, in her course completion paper, said that the Sweet Carol channel is the most famous on the subject in Brazil[20] and a video from her channel was analyzed by Felipe Gue Martini, from the Centro Universitário da Serra Gaúcha.[21]
In 2022, an excerpt from her video simulating the birth of a fetus, using a realistic doll, was used in a fake news story about human cloning, something debunked by the AFP checking agency.[22][23]
