Taiwan Semiconductor Company Limited (TSC; Mandarin: 台灣半導體; pinyin: tái wān bàn dǎo tǐ) has evolved from its origins as a manufacturer of rectifiers and label printer to a global enterprise specializing in the production of components used across various industries including automotive[2], industrial instruments, 5G – 6G communications, power electronics and consumer products. The company's products portfolio encompasses a wide range of offerings such as trench Schottky rectifiers, MOSFETs, TVS devices, transistors, analog ICs, and ESD protection devices.[3]

Taiwan Semiconductor operates two wafer fabrication facilities and two packaging facilities, strategically located in Yilan and Lije (Wujie Township), Taiwan, as well as Tianjin and Shandong, China. The Lije facility primarily focuses on the production of 6-inch wafers[3] and TVS components, Meanwhile, the Tianjin facility is responsible for 4-inch wafers and surface-mount adhesive products. The Shandong plant serves as a dedicated production site for bridge rectifiers and holds certifications such as IATF 16949 for automotive industry quality, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 for environmental management[4]

In the realm of automotive electronics development, Taiwan Semiconductor has established collaborations to further its research and development initiatives. Notably, the company has partnered with United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC)[5] to advance MOSFET technology. Furthermore, TSC's collaborative efforts extend to working with BOSCH in the development of automotive protection devices, with a specific emphasis on enhancing automotive sector capabilities.[6]

The headquarters of Taiwan Semiconductor is situated in the Xindian Districtof New Taipei City, Taiwan. Additionally, the company maintains service centers across various global locations including China, the United States, Germany, and Japan. With a diverse workforce exceeding 1,600 employees, Taiwan Semiconductor maintains a global presence. The company's subsidiary, TSC Auto ID Technology Co., Ltd., specializes in the manufacturing of barcode printers and wireless RFID barcode printers.

History

Taiwan Semiconductor was established in January 1979 by Chairman Arthur Wang. Initially headquartered in Tucheng Township, Taipei County (now Tucheng District), the company's early focus centered on the production of rectifier products. In a bid to expand its horizons and fuel growth, the Yilan Plant was constructed in Yilan County in 1987 and commenced operations the following year. This strategic move significantly boosted the annual production capacity of rectifiers to an impressive 800 million units. By 1991, Taiwan Semiconductor had embarked on a new trajectory, introducing automation systems and venturing into the development and mass production of semiconductor products, including TVS and bridge rectifiers.

Amidst its pursuit of growth, Taiwan Semiconductor made notable investments to establish a footprint in global markets. Notably, the company invested in Eltron Corporation[7] in the United States during 1991, fostering a collaboration that gave rise to the production of thermal transfer and thermal direct barcode printers. Recognizing the burgeoning demand for electronic components in the Chinese market, TSC established Yangxin Everwell Electronic Co., Ltd. in Shandong (April 1995) ,followed by the establishment of Tianjin Everwell Technology Co., Ltd. in Tianjin (August 1996), thereby expanding its production capacity.

A significant milestone arrived in December 1999, when Taiwan Semiconductor submitted an application for listing on the over-the-counter (OTC) market, This endeavor bore fruit on February 21, 2000, when the company's shares were officially listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange at a price of NT$22 per share[8]. The infused capital facilitated the expansion of automation production equipment and catalyzed the development and trial production of barcode printers and Schottky diodes. Demonstrating its commitment to innovation, the Yilan plant established a Schottky diode chip production line in 2002, paving the way for full-scale manufacturing. As part of a strategic pivot towards rectifier diodes as its core focus, Taiwan Semiconductor initiated an investment leading to the establishment of TSC Auto ID Technology Co., Ltd. in 2007. Concomitantly, in August of the same year, the barcode printer business unit transitioned to TSC Auto ID Technology[9], specializing in barcode printer development and production. The ensuing years witnessed significant technological advancements, including the development and implementation of the diode trench process from 2011 to 2013, along with the maturation of the Super Junction process aimed at bolstering capacity in the realms of automotive, lighting, and industrial equipment through automated packaging.[10]

In alignment with the burgeoning significance of automotive electronic control systems, 2016 marked a pivotal juncture as Taiwan Semiconductor acquired the TVS product line from American company Onsemi in a transaction valued at $7.1 million.[11] [12] This strategic acquisition was undertaken to fortify the company's standing within the global automotive and industrial control markets.

As of September 2022, Taiwan Semiconductor unveiled its Q3 financial report, highlighting consolidated quarterly revenue that surged to NTD3.9 billion, reaching an unprecedented peak for a single quarter. The cumulative revenue for the initial three quarters of 2022 tallied up to NTD11.6 billion, accompanied by a post-tax earnings per share of NTD5.03.[13]

Subsidiary

TSC Auto ID Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary established in March 2007, emerged as an independent entity specializing in barcode printing manufacturing subsequent to its separation from the parent company, Taiwan Semiconductor Company. The ownership landscape positions Taiwan Semiconductor as a holder of 36% of shares and control rights within TSC Auto ID. Notably, TSC Auto ID achieved a significant milestone in 2016 by acquiring Printronix Inc., an American industrial printing solutions company.[14] This strategic acquisition propelled TSC Auto ID into the ranks of the top 5 global leaders within the AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) market, solidifying its position as an influential player in the industry.
