Ron A. Adelman is an American ophthalmologist specializing in retinal and macular diseases. He is the chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic Florida, overseeing clinical, research, and educational programs.[1]
Early life and education
Adelman earned his undergraduate degree in medicine from Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of California, Berkeley. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School-affiliated institutions, and received specialized training in retinal surgery through the fellowship at Harvard Medical School. In 2000, he received the Fellow of the Year Award and the Club Vit Fellow Research Award.[2] Adelman also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Yale School of Management.
Career
Adelman joined the Yale School of Medicine in 2001 as an assistant professor and director of the retina service. He later became a professor and served as the interim chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, as well as the ophthalmologist-in-chief of the Yale New Haven Hospital from 2014 to 2016. He also held the position of vice chair of academics and was the Director of the Retina and Macula Center at Yale.[3]
Adelman held leadership positions in various medical societies including serving as the president of the Connecticut State Medical Society (CSMS) from 2021 to 2022,[4][5] president of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (CSEP) from 2014 to 2016,[5] and president of the New Haven County Medical Association (NHCMA) from 2017 to 2019.[6] He has served as the scientific director of the European Vitreo-Retinal Society (EVRS) since 2014,[5] a councilor of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO),[3] and the CME chair of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).[3] He is also an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology[3] and an associate editor of the American Journal of Ophthalmology.[3]
Research
Adelman's research focuses on treatments for wet macular degeneration, including the effectiveness of intravitreal bevacizumab and ranibizumab in a rat model.[7] He has contributed to the development of the inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap technique for macular hole repair.[8] He has also conducted research on re-engineering ocular tissues with stem cells[9] and has studied the differences in Medicare reimbursement between male and female ophthalmologists.[10]
