Tanya Gupta, also known as Guptanya (born November 17, 1996) is an American multimedia artist, engineer, and producer specializing in photomanipulation and surrealist self-portraits. Formerly a NASA engineer, Gupta worked on a prototype aircraft which now sits at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum[1], and she helped invent a software patent in collaboration with Kennedy Space Center[2]. In 2021, Gupta became the first Indian-American to be chosen for the Adobe Creative Residency, a year-long incubator for artists. Gupta is a Forbes 30 Under 30 lister[3] and her work has been featured in Vogue[4], Harper's Bazaar[5], and Teen Vogue.[6]

Biography[edit]

Gupta was born in Reading, England to Indian immigrant parents Radhika and Vivek Gupta. In 2002, her family moved to Chicago, Illinois, until she moved to New York City at age 17 to attend NYU. She received her B.S. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the Tandon School of Engineering in 2019.[7][8] Gupta is a lifetime member of Mensa.

Career[edit]

While attending NYU, Gupta served as an operations engineering intern on the Preliminary Research Aerodynamic Design to Land on Mars (Prandtl-M) prototype Martian aircraft at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center[9] under the direction of former chief engineer Al Bowers. She then helped build the Augmented & Virtual Reality lab at Kennedy Space Center, where she was listed as an innovator on the Rapid Model Import Tool (RMIT)[10], a 3D-modeling conversion software which received a patent when she was 21 years old. After graduating from NYU, Gupta worked as a hardware and AI engineer at IBM.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gupta discovered a passion for digital art and taught herself Photoshop from YouTube tutorials, garnering thousands of followers for sharing her artist journey on social media. She then left IBM to take part in the 2021-22 cohort of the Adobe Creative Residency[11]. Her most notable residency project was an editorial with Ritesh Rajan, who was at the time the voice actor for Ken in Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures[12]. The project was recognized by various media outlets for challenging South Asian stereotypes and redefining expectations of leading men in Hollywood.[13][7]

Gupta is an outspoken advocate for women in STEM and has given several talks about her experience growing up as a minority, particularly a woman of color, in these fields[14]. She sits on the Board of Creatives of 100Cameras, a non-profit organization that equips youth with the tools to tell their stories through photography and art.[15]

Gupta has been featured on multiple podcasts[16][17][18] to discuss her career pivot and has directed campaigns for Adobe, Logitech, and Toyota. She was recognized on the 2023 Forbes 30 Under 30 list under the Art & Style category.[3]

Gupta currently spends her time between New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
